I need some goop Wed, 02 June 2004 09:05 Go to next message
I want to buy some general purpose goop that I can use for things like sumps, water pumps, thermostat housings and the like. It wont be for anything high temp or anything though, just what I listed above. Also I want a cartage type that I can put in a corking gun.

Anyone got any ideas? Thanks

The best thing i have ever found is aviation sealant. Its not for a gun but we use it at work on everything that oil or water touches and have never had a leak

its just in a small container and when u remove the lid it has a brush on the inside..And its also good because if you spill it on your engine you can rub it off with a liuttle bit of thinners

Würth GlueMass has done the trick in my gasket applications. This stuff is equivalent for SikaFlex. Goop comes in normal silicone tube and costs here 3-4¤. I dont know for sure if the GlueMass is the sale name there but I can check the product number.

I find marine sealant from repco works quite well, its just a tube of goo basicly and it has worked well for me on the cooling system.

loctite/permatex blue maxx/ultra blue comes in a cartridge as well as the tooth paste tubes.
the avitation cement/sealant people100 mentioned is great on paper gaskets, but as far as i know isnt sensor safe like all the loctite/permatex silicone sealants.

Loctite 515 , and it doesn't come in a catridge.

How much of the stuff are you planning to use ?

I have a tube of 515 that I have had for over 10 years.

The only other sealants that you need are 569 (oil fittings), 567 (water fittings), and then some hi temp silastic, and of course some anti-sieze copper stuff like Rocol or C5-A, and your set

Cheers

I have a few sumps and water pumps, and some water housings. I was thinking something like the Loctite Copper Maxx or the Grey Maxx.
These seem to do just about everything. I only want to have to use one type if possible.

Not one sealer will do a good/best job at everything.

If you want to minimise the numbers, use 515 and 569 only then. The huge advantage of these is that they have no problems with water, oil or fuel.

Cheers

I don't know how much of an issue it is for you but a general rule for aviation is if it smells like vinegar, you don't use it on an aircraft. Roughly translated, it means that silastic based sealants (smells like vinegar) are corrosive to some alloys. I haven't thought about what alloys you would be wanting to use it on, just thought I would add my 2c worth.

while that is true with most general purpose silastics can be corrosive if they are not natural cure ones, the loctite/permatex RTV silicones are not the corrosive types.
