Ive bought some nice pioneer 6inches that i want to put at the front of my doors but unsure of the best way to go about it.. i want to put the speakers up front but the problem is they hit the inside of the door, i dont want to go and cut a hole in the body work behind the door trim unless i really have to.. feel free to share your experiences or send me pics of how you did yours..
cheers.

I'm in the process of considering how I'm going to mount some splits in my RA23. Kick panels would work alright, there is a decent amount of room there, but I don't like people kicking them. The only way you are going to fit speakers on your doors without cutting is by making some fiberglass door pods. These will put the speaker out a fair bit, probably around 8-10cm, depending on what angle you mount them at. The pods would probably extend along the door until they could vent into the nearest hole, otherwise you'll loose a bit of midbass.
My other options was to cut into the door in a tasteful way and in a position where there isn't much in the way of structural stuff. You could probably weld in some supports around the hole for peace of mind if you are worrie about the structure. The hole would't need to be any bigger than the size of the magnet. Doing this would allow you to mount the speakers in a little more, with possibly only 5-7cm out from the original trim. Also, the hole directly behind the midrange would be great for venting.
You could probably manage this with 3" holesaw rather than hacking at it with a hacksaw. It would definately leave a nicer finish. Make sure you mount your speaker to some MDF, then screw the MDF to the door.
Pods will be the way to go, but if you don't want them sticking too far into your car, you will need to start cutting.

dont be soft, cut into the door, just a a few inchs of circle will do it, wont hurt anything at all, make sure you have enough room for window mechanisms though.

Major Clod, i was also thinking about going this way by using speaker pods, would look nice too and i dont think it will be much hassle.. sound quality will be effected too if i cut a hole in the door, since i dont have a sub yet, it be nice to have some mid range up front..
stylez, ill probably end up cutting anyway, because i dont want the speakers being in too far otherwise people can accidently kick them and what not.
Bman i first looked at your setup awhile ago when you had your ta22 up for sale, i like the way youve done that, did you make those pods up yourself? and has the door been cut behind it?

sikta22 - no i bought those from JB hi fi down here in melb. i think a company called stinger? make them, cost about $130 for memory. i only cut a small circuar hole in the door, big enough to get the wire thru to the speaker.
sounded pretty good for a pair of 6" 3 ways running off the head unit.

try can cut the least amount of metal from the door as possible ..
the door probably already rattles like all hell - so no point making it any weaker
Space the speakers out about 3/4 of an inch on some MDF and utilize the hole thats behind the skin ..
Secure solidly with threaded bolts or good quality screws for stiffness ..
on the spacer - cover it with marine carpet to match the skin - if your a black door - your in luck - as its the easiest colour to blend in ..
I had 6.5 inch phillips splits on my doors , havent got a pic i dont think - but if Jezz is about - get him to snap one - hes got my ta22 now
If you need help with 6x9.s in the parcel shelf lemme know ..

The only problem with utilising the holes behind the door trim is that on the early model celicas there isn't any near the front of the door. the closest is probably in the area near the crossover in the picture above. Mounted there they will be quite close to the seats and provide poor imaging.
Boris, would you be able to post a picture showing how far out those pods go? Any what are they like in the car... Do they get in the way at all? Also, how do the Jaycar Kevlar splits sound.. I've heard nothing but good things about them.

yeah i do want my speakers closer to the front as possible, it just looks so much better there.. i made a new parcel shelf for my ta22, so now all i need is some 6 x 9s or some 7x10s if anyone has done that? 6x9s will fit long ways in the existing holes but i wanna have them placed sideways..
well it looks like im gonna be puttin holes in the doors and im gonna start looking for some nice speaker pods.. too bad my interior is brown and white, itl be all tan leathered up eventually..

6x9's on a piece of MDF will fit long ways no issues. they will also fit diagonally too.
um are you going to run a sub? if so DON'T use 6x9's.
(i much prefer mid bass from splits with the sub filling in the rest)
make your own pods - boris has put an excellent pic there (as has brad) which give you some good examples ; go get yourself some MDF offcuts and get sawing/upholstering - not hard.
(sorry off topic stu you need to date stamp your signature)

Major Clod, they do stick out a little more than i expected although with a little getting used too its no hassle... as for the splits, at the moment i've got them running off my head unit till i sort out some major grounding loop problems i'm having with my amp but they sound damn good and F**&#Cking good when hooked up to an amp.
