engine chokes on throttle (with video) Fri, 04 June 2004 04:49 Go to next message
5MGE is now running, (using the shorted fuel pump check connector, as afm has been replaced with map)

when throttle is applied, engine dies/chokes and revs drop dramatically, if you apply the throttle very gently it can speed up. revving the engine constantly results in what seems like a backfire through out the intake...

i think the engine could be drowning in fuel, exhaust is spitting out liquid (could be fuel not sure), and smoke is coming from exhaust manifold (could be unrelated Rolling Eyes )

any ideas ppl?

p.s. thanks for ur help glen

The problem that you describe is from a lean condition - not a fat condition.

Bad timing could cause similar issues (points gap too close etc etc etc)

As Jason mentioned it could be a timing issue, but that's easy enough to check. My money is on a VAC LEAK causing it to lean out. Pay special attention to the area between the throttle body and the AFM; I had a leak there once on my 6M and it did exactly what you're describing. Took me ages to figure out what it was because the leak was in a hard to find spot!
