I'm about to change my 1jz water pump, non hydraulic, with the same as my old one is leaking. This looks like a really difficult job. I have done a lot of reasearch and pretty much know how to do it, but would appreciate a little advice.

I'm about to do much the same thing on my 2JZ-GTE. I'm just buying a whole new water pump from a Lexus dealer - any Lexus with a 2JZ-GE (eg GS300) will have a conventional water pump without any of the hydraulic crap, and it will bolt right in. I'm not sure if it comes with a pulley though, will have to check.

Norbie, Your lucky that the MKIV website has the procedure from the manual poster for the timing belt and diagrams of the pump etc. Note that there are a few extra o-rings required on 1jz and maybe 2jz between the pump and the water outlet housing (to top rad hose).
I suggest you do your research carefully and make sure you have all the bits. I'll be short the o-rings but i'll try and buy an assorted box load so I can find one that will fit. Toyota don't stock them.
Some people say to change water pump, timing belt, idler pulley, tensioner, cam seals & crank seals at same time. Also top & bottom radiator hoses & thermostat. I'm skipping the seals and the tensioner. Tensioner not available and seals not really necessary unless leaking, I hope anyway.
