wanted to modify my air intake to maximise flow. any ideas on the best and most cost effective way to do this?

cut hole in box, run pipe to standard filter or K&N replacement one.

yep, but if the pipe is too low you may pick up water when it rains and that is not good at all.

is there any need to cut a hole ay filter end of box as it is only a smallish slot at the moment

That small slot is the restriction...
