4.5 L Turbo Crown-THE RESULTS ARE IN!!

After a few false starts, the crown has had both a successful dyno session and visit to the drag strip. On friday arvo the crown was tied down on a dyno dynamics unit and managed 281rwkw with the dyno in shootout mode at a lazy 4700rpm, 13.5 psi boost, 16.5 degrees timing on pump premium. AFR was 11.2 on boost, with the mixtures being kept a little rich as insurance, as leaning it out proved to have no effect on power. The new converter has also made it less prone to wheelspin on the rollers.
Then on sunday was jugement day at AIR.
The first run was good but didn't feel as fast as I had been expecting. It got out of the hole well with a 1.9 sec 60ft time, then when I shifted to second and buried it, it went all over the track. I had to get off it, then back on and hit third, where it went well, but didn't feel as quick as I was expecting. The timeslip told the story. 12.4@112mph-hmm, a bit average.
When I was mucking about under the hood I saw that the boost guage line was off, so I put it back on. What I didn't twig to was that the blowoff valve runs off the same line, so during the 1st run the blowoff valve was just being pushed open by boost-limiting the car to under 10 psi.
I lined up for the second run and let rip, with the car feeling pretty awesome once I'd hit 3rd and got traction. Towards the end of the strip the rear started to bounce around a bit. I kept my foot down hoping to drive through it, but the power was just reinforcing the bounce. I got off the gas about 100-150 ft out and rolled through the lights with my hands shaking on the wheel. (the bouncing at 190 kph was a little hairy)
The run had felt much faster than the first, but as I'd rolled through I was expecting another 12-However the slip told another story
11.65@108
I did'nt get another run as it was sooooooo busy-although as had cracked the 11's it didn't really matter-I was happy and NOTHING BROKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
About f**ken time.
And I havent even pushed the motor yet AND that time was run with Simex light truck tyres (225/75) And I had to back off.........
YAY.
Anyone care host a couple of pics? (timeslips, dyno sheet and track pics)
Sean

I know it may be a bit much to ask, but did anyone get video footage of the run?
it sounds like you suffered "norbie-itis", characterised by first time on a drag strip and scaring yourself with the amount of power, and what happens when you floor it in 2nd gear (although norbie only suffered axle tramp - sounds like yours was much more interesting)

you would really have to be happy with that, would be really interesting to see how you do next time at the track once you've sorted your little problems out

an 11.65 at 108mph with a 2.03 sec 60 footer and only gaining 8 mph in the top end, should be good for low 10's if r game enuff to chuck slicks on it and keep the foot buried,
BTW, get a cage
mmmmmmmm, 14 degrees ambient temp , bring on the 4 degrees this weekend at the winters

Is this with the TD07 or with the old T04 that was on the 5MTEU?
Either way it is a awesome effort.
Are you keeping the car registered or making it drags only now. I saw the front end and assume she's been relegated to full time track duties. I'm sure she wouldn't be the best thing to cruise through the hils in but it'd be a shame to take such a beautiful car off the road for good.

Sean,
How do you find the headlights withthe mess front ?? I was seriously considering something similar for my MS65.
I was going to make an alloy slat panel, kinda like the mini truck grills you see getting around.

Cheers for the encouragement guys, I'm glad you like it. The car is still registered, however you are correct in saying it's not too flash for road duties at the moment. Cosmetically it still needs the stock bonnet back on-but I need to make a different plenum setup so it fits under the hood first (the scoop just covers the hole where the intake manifold sticks out). In addition, the lights need to be re-done as the i/c piping is in the way of the stock location now. (Currently there are NO lights at all behind that grille......although Rod, I intend to leave the mesh there and put the lights behind that) I'm slowly working my way through it though all the bits and pieces to get it all sorted. As far as driving on the road, it's better than you'd think. The motor is so stock that it idles at 550 rpm, and with a 3.23 ratio diff and .68 overdrive it cruises at less than 1800 rpm. It's really smooth on the road, but of course the handling characteristics aren't all that flash for twisty bits(a 30 car with a full chassis is never too good.........). In short, yes it is regoed, but there are a few bits and pieces to do before it can be cruised around in relative anonymity (like getting rid of that ugly scoop). At the moment however, I'll also be enjoying it on a regular basis at the strip. The strip is the only place I can let it out, and ultimately stright line speed was what it was built for. Basically, it will turn the tyres at any speed in any gear up to 100kph-and I just haven't tried it any faster than that (except O/D, as if I try that in O/D it'll burn out the clutches in about 5 seconds..........) Next spring/summer I'm intending to take it to a few major events for racing duties actually. Should be good fun.
