Do not, I repeat, DO NOT buy a second-hand helmet. Never trust anyone who wants to sell you one. Even your little size 58 head deserves more than unquestionable protection.
Spent the $500 and buy a new one, properly fitted to your scone. This is one area you do not want to go cheap on.

hey Toymax,
there is 0 possibility of me having $500 to spend on a new one atm
I am buying a second hand one most likely off someone I trust for $80 tonight I reckon
This is better than not having one till I can get the $500 I need
I so wish I had the money for a new one now, but I don't...
what do you think? thanks for the reply dude

everyone I've talked to says the same thing. Don't skimp out on the helmets. This was especially true when I was getting into motorbikes, but also true when I seriously looked into racing. The $80 will get you past the judges at the local drags, but at cams events they'll most likely laugh at you, and if there comes a time when the helmet has to fulfil it's function.... well, who knows?

Mate, take it from an old bloke who still has a head, only buy that helmet if the person is someone you trust with your life (because that's what we're talking about, right?), and you know the entire history of the helmet.
That is, do not buy it if it is a second-hand, second-hand helmet. Only consider it if your "trusted" person bought it new and has never had a car crash or fallen of a motor bike with it on, or has even dropped it when carrying it.
Trust me, your head ain't worth it.
Be patient and save up for a new one if you don't know the full history of the one you are considering - just don't by that set of name-brand brake calipers, leather steering wheel or wanky bonnet-mounted gauges for a few months, and you'll have the cash.
Good luck!

eh hehehe Greg
ok, I bought it from IRALLY, Michael who has had it from new. Never been dropped let alone crashed etc etc and every mark accounted for.
Of course he "could" be making all that up, but somehow I doubt it.
That said, the ONLY way to be safe is to have it from the shop, though, there is no guaruntee that they didn't drop it in the shop somewhere heheh
You are all right. However, considering my main purposes atm are a cams license and WSID, my helmey will be ok
My MTB helmet has literally saved my life on many occasions and I appreciate the value of good protection.
Dudes thanks for the wise reminders. It is so cool to think there are some top dudes like you all on here. Your advice WILL ensure I get a new helmet before I take to track racing or rally driving.
I wouldn't even think of buying second hand if I was going to be motorbike riding
