Do you want to know the widest tyre that will physically fit, or the widest tyre that will actually work well?

If the former, I'd say you could get a 235 tyre on there without much of a problem. If the latter, I wouldn't go any larger than a 205, and even that's a bit dubious.

If the tyre is too wide for the rim it will wobble around under high cornering loads. 205 is just on the edge of OK, but 195 would be better.

if you go to much wide in tyre it bags. it flexes the sidwall extra so is good of the mark but not nice in a corner!

Depends entirely on what the profile of the tyre is.

Let me know the proposed size, and I can tell you whether it is legal or not

There isn't much bulge with a 195 on a 6.5 inch rim. If you're a bad parker or hate scratching rims go for a bit wider to get a bit more bulge (then most of the time you'll just rub tyre sidewall). Everytime you touch a gutter you will hit the rim with a 195. I did it once or twice to mine Embarassed , then you soon learn not to do that again Smile
Now I have 195s on a 5 inch rim which is too bulgy but works ok (Got some Yokies cheap)

205/50's on a 6.5inch rim OR 205/55's.....

If they are 15", then a 6.5" & 7.0" rim is the recommended (preferred), or 5.5" to 7.5" is allowable.

If they are 14" , the specs are the same.

This is from the "Universal Wheel & Tyre Fitment guide" (Issue 6, Jan '03) which all tyre places should use

Cheers

According to Bridgestone and someone else (can't remember), for their 215/60R15 they recommend a 6.5" wheel if thats any indication.

Not that I could see. My car has 205/60 on a 6" wheel, and others will attest it sure ain't adversely affecting my handling.

I'll bet money you'd notice the difference if you used 7" rims with the same tyre.

Difference yes, but who's to say it'd be better? 6" is the recommended width for a 205/60 by most tyre companies.

It would be for the better, believe me!

A 6" rim may indeed be recommended by some tyre companies, but recommended for what? Comfort or performance?

Recommended is 6.0 or 6.5, with permitted being 5.5 to 7.5"

225/60x15's are recommended for 6.5 to 7.0" with permitted being 6.0 to 8.0

Since when are you buying a performance tyre for comfort?

Re: Widest tyre i can fit on 6.5 inch rim? Tue, 08 June 2004 08:39 Go to previous messageGo to next message
My main point was that my 205's on a 6" rim sit basically flush with the rim. The last car I drove with 205's on 7" rims wasn't a great experience, although I'll put some of that as type of tyre.

There is more to it than just saying X tyre suits Y width rim. The tyre companies are going to suggest a tyre that looks good in the market that they sell them in. i.e. wouldn't it make sense for them to market a performance tyre with the setup that'll make their tyre perform the best?

Re: Widest tyre i can fit on 6.5 inch rim? Tue, 08 June 2004 11:56 Go to previous messageGo to next message
The issue here is sidewall flex, and I think it goes without saying that a wider rim is going to support the tyre better than a narrower one (within limits of course). A metal wheel is a whole lot stiffer than a rubber tyre!

I have a 205 tyre on a 7" rim and it works extremely well; far better than the same tyre on a 5.5" rim.

It's a sidewall flex thing, thats why the drifters stretch 185's and 195's over their 7-7.5inch rims and more.

I have 205's on 7inch rims, and have no have no problems with the setup.

Oh I understand why they do it, where I was coming from though was that if you want less sidewall flex, get a lower profile tyre.
By having the tyre in its optimum stretch, it can work the way it was designed. Stretching the sidewalls to fit on a wider rim obviously is going to make it flex less, but not to the manufacturers intentions.
Obviously it is better than going the other way, Glen's (no mean to pick) 265's on 7" rim really lean on the tyres.
