In tank fuel pump question.

I'm wanting to clean up the engine bay in my RA28 project and the main source of the current mess is the fuel pump and surge tank being mounted in there.
I'd like to go for an in tank pump setup and would be looking at pulling the pump out of an RA65 and modifying it to suit the RA28 fuel tank.
This is to run an 18R-GEU and I'd like to have a fuel pump that can supply fuel up to 120rwkw (for the sake of argument)
Would the RA65 setup be able to supply enough fuel or should I be looking at a better setup from the word go.
Also what other factory toyota injectors fit in the 18r-geu rail that have a higher flow rate?

1. Yes, an RA65 pump will flow more than enough for your needs.
2. Practically any top-feed Toyota injector will fit in your fuel rail. The largest one I know of is the 440cc injector from the 7M-GTE but I doubt you want anything that big! 7M-GE injectors might be a good upgrade though.

I'd definitely look at modifying an RA65 tank to fit... if that's possible it would be a much neater solution!

Agree with Norbie and the others above, modifying an existing efi tank to fit is much better than trying to fit an in-tank pump to a RA28.
On this subject, does anyone know of an EFI Toyota that has its tank upright behind the rear seat ? Something suitable for a TA22 or RA23 EFI engine conversion ?
Cheers,
Mitch.
(Just thinking out loud).

Hmm i've got a RA65 tank at home might have to see if it will fit
I brought it originally to get the baffles out of but might prove to be more useful in 1 piece.
Mitch - the Crowns, umm what model... MS12x? with the 5ME engine had an upright tank in the boot.

Ahh mate I may have given you a bumsteer here.
The MS112 I was thinking of has the pump under the car.
But yeah maybe later models moved to a swimmer design.
Sorry!

Well may be a different way of doing things, but it does works. We made an extra baffle out of a aluminium tube 60 dia, tig welded an end on it, 3mm thick, only need to be 50-60 tall and fitted it in through the existing pickup hole. It had four 1/2" holes drilled into each corner and this was cabled tied to the F/P, a big bosch motorsport one at that. At first I thought yeah right but a few guys that had the same surge problems with standard EFI tanks, we ran the same, and suggested it, so we gave it a go.... and it works, I've also done it to the G/F's AE82 20V conversion too using a non EFI tank, and again, no surge or problems....Don't know the hole size for an TA22, but worth a look.

The RA28 tank I dont think has a removable plate for the pickup. It has a hole for the fuel sender but thats about it.
Johnny - What you suggested sounds like a good idea. Maybe a hole can be cut in the RA28 tank to fit the pipe/pump in.

Joel,
The '28 should have a removeable plate for the pick-up. I don't know this for sure. My RA23 has one in the top of the tank which I was thinking of using to create a mount for an in-tank fuel pump which includes a baffle plate / tube surrounding the pick-up with holes drilled to allow fuel into the thing.

No I used a VL turbo external, cut off the pickup and sliver soldered a new larger pickup in, still worked. The rally car uses an internal with the same idea. If you want to use an internal, you may have to bend the filter to fit...

Digging up a bit of an old thread.. but...
The RA65 tank seems no way to fit this. I spent some time with it this weekend. It sits somewhere around 5cm lower than the factory ra28 tank and this is after attacking it with a sledge hammer to get it in the somewhat correct shape. Just totally the wrong shape for the car.
Its a pain that the ra28 tank doesn't have a removable plate where the pickup lines go in like ae86/t18/etc tanks have.
