or was hooked up the wrong way to power source?

the fact that turning the key (to Acc?) smoked it suggests that you pulled a massive amount of current thru it

there's probably a major short somewhere?

did you have an inline fuse in the power line to the amp? and if so, did it blow?

This may sound like a dumb question but, have you got a decent earth to your engine block?

it's a BOSS 1000 watt 4 ch chrome amp from brisbane car sound..i had all the correct wires in the right place..but maybe it was the earth?..i had a 8 gage earth wire from the amp to under the carpet in the boot (st162) onto a metal bolt .. i used to have the exact same amp running a few months ago when i was borrowing a freinds..that was b4 the engine rebuild tho so maybe i forgot an eath wire somewhere maybe..and yes the power wire from the battery has a large inline fuse and didnt blow..and the amp had 2 fuses that didnt blow and in the owners manual of the amp it is apparently surge-blow up-etc protected so i dont know whats going on..with my alstenator there is a wire hanging off witch is apparently for earthing is this surposed to be connected to anything? i have no idea, it is just hanging there
thanks heaps

Thats the problem, when BOSS made the amp they put way to many 0000000s on the end of the power figure and it simply exploded.

Engine conversion? Yep its a bad earth. You are missing an earth that is meant to be connected to the engine.

Rolling Eyes (awaits falming) ok maybe i kind of remeber mis placing 1 wire..i put it next to the car and the next day it wasnt therre so i figured maybe my step dad put it in..i dont know but that might be the one..is there meant to be something connected to the wire from the altenator?

ok sorry to dig up this fossel but i still have my amp and sub's, but am to scared to install it again cos i dont want the same thing to happen..i have since put in an alternator earth wire (8 gage) and cleaned my battery terminals and checked all the other earths on the engine... apparently my ignition is dodgey/faulty hence why it takes a while to start up and idle drops when i turn on the lights and such ( or sp a machanic told me)..basically..do you think this might happen again cos im really missing 'tha BaSs'..thanks guys

Your missing wire black/yellow is an earth. Make sure batt is earthed to chassis/body and block is earthed to batt/body, 8g should be ok.

Not blowing fuses is a major worry. Stupid Q but did you have power run to earth connnection and vice versa or perhaps run power to both earth and power? Thus creating the "no more bad earths amp"

Re: Amp problem Fri, 22 October 2004 07:37 Go to previous message
This is probably a long shot, but could the alternator voltage regulator be faulty? Depending on how the amp regulates the voltage at its powersupply, could it have bumped the voltage high enough for a transistor to short and take out others too maybe, hence the amount of smoke?

I dunno, I only work on guitar and PA amps, I don't like car audio amps with their switchmode powersupplies...

Cheers,
James
