4agze in ae82

I plan to get a 4agze into my 4age ae82. I can get a half cut from an ae92 for $2350. The only thing is I don't think the hubs and brakes etc will bolt up to the setup I already have. Is it better to just get a motor/gearbox/computer package (forget about the brake upgrade)..would my old driveshafts bolt up to the new GZE gearbox. Sort of want to do it cheap and all myself..or as much as i can do. Would it pass engineers test if standard 4age brakes used.
Thanks guys

hey there,
depends on the gearbox u use, if its the lsd then im 99% sure u will need to change the hubs to fit and change shafts.
if its a no lsd box then then standard shafts May fit.
if u r geting a halfcut then just change the brakes over, if its the ae92 halfcut then they will bolt up
if u need to ask anything, give us a bell

AE82 shafts bolt up to 20v gearbox & the AE92 GZE Box wont go in with out a modifided crossmember as we have allready done this conversion but ended up using the 20v box..

definitely don't try and use the GZE box as it needs major mods to fit. The 20V gearbox has shorter ratios so will accelerate faster and has the bonus of being able to use your standard CV's
and either get them strengthened or just get 2nd hand ones from wreckers overtime u break em .
You could even use your stock Gearbox but it wont last long
Ive done this conversion and i know it works!
just be sure to get i good strong clutch cos the standard ones die very quickly with that much torque

Im sick to death of hearing people say.. "Bolt the 20v box in cause its got better ratio's"
Sure its got shorter gearing.. BUT.. Everyone seems very quick to forget that the GZE produces its peak power a LOT lower down than the GE.. The power up top on a gze is shithouse.. Its very flat and lifeless.. the GZE's are all down low..
Therefore.. with the 20v box.. Sure.. 1st gear.. your off.. 2nd gear.. it puts you right into the powerband for 20v/ge not a GZE..
From what ive read and seen, its not that difficult to put the e51 tranny into a rolla.. Then at the end of the day when you launch hard off the line your not waiting for the "CRACK" sound... The sound of a breaking box.. Not happy jan.

Also the GZE Shafts have got sooooo much more meat to them than the GE ones. When i put the GZE shafts into the mr2 i couldnt believe the diff in girth!.. and they went straight into the standard hub.

hey there, I put the gze lsd gearbox into my ae82 with the 101 gze engine, i put ae92 front hubs and brakes for the bigger shafts, the shafts r the same as a v6 camry, just abit shorter for the rollas, only mod i had to do was weld the gearbox bracket from my half cut onto my chassis, pretty easy with a welder.

did you have to modify the crossmember? cos thats what stopped me using the GZE box in my 82 there was simply no room without removing a large section of the crossmember to fit the diff.
Also did you retain the equal length CV's?

WHATS WITH ALL THIS BULLSHIT ABOUT SOMEBODYS COUSINS UNCLES ESTRANGED WIFE SAID THIS WOULDNT WORK AND PEOPLE CARRY ON LIKE ITS GOSPEL...YOU ALL NEED TO WAKE UP AND DO WHATS CALLED RESEARCH BUT ILL PUT IN MY 5 CENTS ANYHOW CAUSE LYLE (CORVID) TRIED TO.....
First of all.
AE92 Levin hubs will FIT, the control arm has to have the holes opened out slightly to accept the larger studs of the ball joint
that is ALL and use the ae82 strut tops to maintain the stud pattern.
Second of all
The 20V box is good because gearing is short, means quick acceleration but has less top end also....its a compromise. STD 4agze box uses a 4.285 diff ratio and more than adequately accelerates well, take my word for it, my MR2 box runs similar gearing and same final drive and it accelerates fantastically.
Third of all
THE GZE GEARBOX FITS EASILY. I DONT KNOW WHAT YOU JOKERS ARE ALL ON ABOUT...
you have to use a FWD GZE rear gearbox mount and move it back to second hole on the x-member, redrill the rear hole and use a packing block to push the X-Member down at the back, 30mm lower.
Shafts will work fine, fit straight into the hubs.
I DO ALL OF MY OWN WORK
and for those who know my car see what i mean. so unless you have tried something and know it doesn't fit then DONT speak, its simple.
for the record, I run an MR2 turbo gearbox behind my 3SGTE in my AE82, and this is of similar size to E51 GZE box and fits just fine, shafts are slightly larger than GZE ones, and LSD uses different inner CV joints, with shorter splines engaging into the centre.
So if you have nothing useful to say then don't say it.
This is why i don't post on here anymore, nobody puts the effort in to try and research before they speak, its simple and saves you many hassles.
/end rant
Michael
PS, Lyle hows the AW11 going mate? Gotta catch up some time soon, got the LSD box in now and boy does it grip a lot better...was making 138.9kw at wheels on 14psi Sunday, has more in it but fuel mixtures are leaning out on 15psi...so for now its alright.

the method of using spacers under the Xmember was simply not possible for my applicationas with a lowerd car (85mm lower)the clearance to the ground is already tight so making the lowest point of the chassis within 50mm of the ground would be totally stupid!. i did consider the spacersand was informed by some others that it was not a good idea for structural reasons.
Also calm down with the flamer i am simply sharing my experiences so that others can make informed decisions whilst modifying ther own cars.

with 85mm lower I wish your cv joints good luck, they wear quickly enough being 50mm lower =]
and if its a solid spacer then you don't have any structural problems, if you space iwht washers or something then yes you will.....
I wasnt aiming it towards you mate, just all the other clowns who share what their mates uncle has told them =]

Thanks guys for all your input. I've been away for a while, I have a few things to think about with regards to the conversion.
Thanks again
