7M Headgaskets and the best spray to use ?? Thu, 10 June 2004 22:36 Go to next message
Hi all fellow 7M users,

Just found a thread in SupraMania (US based forum), where they were discussing the merits of fitting a MHG without the much referred to lapping etc , but expoused the careful cleaning and use of "Permatex Brake Quiet" instead of the much referred copper sprays. Shocked

http://www.supramania.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=8 7091#87091

Can any of those that have used the various good gear post any opinions and also part numbers etc of the stuff that is recommended ?

As a fellow 7M-GTE owner in search of more sensible power, I will no doubt at some stage in the future be required to do this Rolling Eyes , but am all for "being prepared" in advance with any useful info.

I know people have posted with a 'generic' description and brand, eg 'Hylomar Copper Spray', but to ensure that I get the right stuff (baby), a part number would be invaluable.

Personally, loctite has always been my friend, but happy to go with others recommendations and experiences when superior to me (Nods at Ed_MA61, Allan, YelloRolla et al)

Cheers

Michael B

lapping the head?? **wank wank wank**

as for sprays:

ive got nothing but praise for ACL brand Hylomar 'spray' (you can also get in a can with a brush - but this is shitful to use!). cost is about $17.

quite good to use as a gasket sealant everywhere on the engine actually, but dont expect to reuse paper gaskets afterwards

Cheers Ed for the quick response.

Lapping the head/superfine finish - I understand that is no prob for a normal composite gasket, but is it REALLY a wank for a MHG ?

If so, I'll get a MHG as a spare rather than the ACL I have sitting in the shed ?

Cheers

for a MHG you want a superfine machined finish, yes... but this can be achieved through good machinist workmanship. you want the head and block to look as close to a mirror as possible without any evidence of machining 'swirls'.

lapping? good luck to anyone who things they can actually do it properly. talk to dave about his experiences lapping lenses for large telescopes. ill say nothing of the guy who took to his head with 1000grit sandpaper Rolling Eyes

anyway, fwiw: ACL Hylomar gasket adhesive - ive never heard it referred to as copper spray.

I have had no problems with my stock toyota gasket i slaped in mine the only things different was ARP studs and i got them to do the head to a VERY fine finish, dont beleave the bullshit about them needing "bite" it just quicker for head place to do a corse finish

i didnt use any spray for the normal gasket seemed to be pre coated anyway

smooth head surface, Scotchbrite to clean the block and arp studs Very Happy

At a localSprint Auto, they are selling the small can for about $18, and the larger one for about $26 ?

ACL Hylomar spray is the best. Smile

i pulled apart my old 3 peice metal headgasket and relayered it with Hylomar, and have it on the 4agte now.
i had to do an emergency rebuild on my friends 4agte sunday night just gone, i had to re-use his headgasket as no-one in town had one. the Hylomar spray saved the night and he got 750k's home with boost and is still driving it around. Very Happy
