G'day, I am wanting to know if I can get a plate type LSD for the rear diff of my ST165, or can I transplant one from another vehicle
Cheers

you could try slotting in a st185 unit , they are a torsen job .. Not 100% if it fits though - i know the 205 and 185 ones are interchangable .

The ST165 comes out standard with a Torsen rear diff. I was told that the plate type LSD was a better option. Then again, someone could be pulling my chain

the torsens fine!
the only upgrade path worthy IMHO is to the TRD version , though inall honesty do you plan to put big HP thru the driveline ?
A better investment would be an st205 Gearox + front LSD if you can track one down ..

The car will see a bit of gravel so i want some good rear end grip i will look out for the ST205 setup. But trying to get a hold of a TRD LSD I dont like my chances.

Charoen had a st205 rear i think ..
re TRD rear LSD - yeah - options are slim to fuck all chance ..
You could always ask Neal bates motorsport in canberra if they have a second hand unit .. Otherwise its new im afraid

What kind of centre diff does the ST165 have? I know the front is an open 50/50 torqu split, and the rear is a torsen LSD, but what is the centre? Planetary gear setup open diff?

I guess you'd have to take the front gearbox apart to find out?

The center diff is a viscous coupling. I am pretty sure that the first 3000 JDM ST165's had a manually locking system

Sorry guys the 165 has an open rear diff.
All Aussie delivered 185's and 205's have the Torsen rear end which is identical for both models.
Either of these diffs will bolt straight into a 165 so it's an easy fix.
The torsion is the best open for a street driven car as they basically never wear out and are 'open' when not under load so tight turns etc are no probs.
I have a TRD diff currently in my red beast. Treating it very gently as i want it in good nick when i swap in the Supra diff. It's tight, skips the tyres on tight turns.

What about an import (my ST165 is coming from Japan) I'm guessing it's JDM, so what kind of diff(s) does it have? I know the front diff is open, but the rest?

It should still be an open rear diff.
All the front diffs are open and i'm pretty sure all the centre diffs are viscous LSD. The early 165 had basically the same transmission as the RAV 4 with the electronic centre diff lock. Kinda cool but the box is nowhere near as strong as the later boxes (185 onwards).

Sorry, just re-read my post and i wasn't competely clear. All the later centre difs after the difflock equipped version are viscous centres.

Hrm - so the idea would be to grab an ST185/ST205 torsen rear diff and then it's all good? Except for going stupid and getting the ST205 gearbox with the LSD in the front as well...

Depends on the year 165. post 87 ditch the diff lock i think.
A torsen diff from a 205 (just newer) would be a good improvement.
I'm yet to confirm what 205's if any had a front LSD. If you see how they mesh with the centre diff there's bugger all room there to do anything fancy.
I have 2 205 boxes but none in bits to check

So grab a 87 or later centre diff if the car has the manual locking thing

Not really, you're better of getting a whole later model gearbox as by the time you pay to fit a center viscous diff you're gonna be up for similar dollars anyway and the later boxes are much stronger anyway. Basically the later the stronger. Not much to pick between the 205 and ST185 GrpA boxes other than ratios and rumour has it a larger rear viscous coupling.
I'd just run what the car comes with until it breaks and then bin the 165 box and upgrade. If it never breaks then you've had good luck and saved some dollars. With any powerup though i think you're gonna break it
good excuse to go with the full 205 driveline into a 165....that would be a nice combo

I've never heard of people having trouble (in motorsport circles at least) with the standard gearbox in GT4s?

Syncros mainly, which is why the 185 Grp A and 205 boxes ended up with the upgraded gear.
165 boxes, while not fragile like a WRX box, will break though. A big hp 165 car in the US used to eat boxes on a regular basis. Last i heard he was trying a later model box but faded off the lists i'm on so don't know how he went.
I've seen one rally ST 185 GrpA box go in the PRC Class. Bate's Grp N uses an aftermarket straight cut gear set.
My current 190kw at the wheels has chewed out a twin plate clutch but the 205 box is still hanging in there (touch wood). She'll bag up all 4 off the line no probs.
Pfitzner do a nice straight cut competition close ratio gearset and they are currently on 'run out' sale for around 5K

Your gear box may still be alive because of the clutch lunching itself Sometimes it pays to have a 'weakness' somewhere, preferably the cheapest to replace component.

After doing a google search for st165 I found an article which had the stats and description of the drive line. It states that the st165 came with a viscous center diff and a torsen rear. It was from a rallysport writeup.(google st165, second heading). I suppose the only way I will truly know is when the car arrives

Yeah that's what I'm waiting for - it's a 1988, so it has the viscous coupling for sure. I doubt it will have an LSD in the rear though.

I'd be interested to hear if it does have a torsion rear diff when it turns up. US delivered 165 never had a trosion rear and all the kiwi jap imports that have been opened up are single spinners as well. If the article states that all had the torsion then it's clearly suss...still if you end up with a torsion rear diff it's all good

If you're talking about factory then Yup. TRD, Quaife and possibly KAAZ do clutch pack style centres.
