what causes toyota ecus to retard timming? Mon, 14 June 2004 03:29 Go to next message
a mate of mines 1g is suffering severe ignition timming on boost
before i go round to check it out i wanna be 100% sure what causes it?

water temp sensor: when coolant gets to hot it puts it retards timming till ecu is reset

Intake air sensor: when the induction air is too hot it retards ignition temporary, till drop in temp

fuel pressure: when fuel pressure isnt high enough, causes it retard because there aint enough fuel??

anymore ?? feel free to correct if im wrong or add more

As far as I know, the knock sensors are used to control timing retard. I have never seen a pressure transducer in a fuel rail(although I mainly blow up 7Ms) so I doubt fuel pressure is used for feedback.

Go to http://www.autoshop101.com and click the tech article link. Hours of reading, and a detailed explanation of just about everything...

1G GTE has two knock sensors screwd into the block underneath the intake manifold.

my 1G loom had no fuel pressure sensor and the air temp sensor is in the AFM so it's unlikely that it would see the heat from the turbos Wink
