Just a bit of fun, what's everyone's fav sounding car? I'm going to get the ball rolling with the wicked Group B Audi Quattro (recorded off of a dodgy VHS called the Rally Supercars but it still sounds great when cranked).
Audi quattro MP3 (0.96Mb)
Mmmm - 2.2L straight 5 turbo

It's a shame people keep saying that it's all about the 'aussie muscle' when it's actually a case of 'american muscle'
I dunno about them sounding the best though, they do sound good though when going through Adelaide - lots of nice acoustics at a street circuit

What do you mean only pre 85 cars sound good?? Listen to the 350z, m3 (testimony that straight sixes can sound good), s8 etc.
Its a shame these cars are hideously expensive though.
18RC with extractors and no muffler sounded pretty rorty (or so i thought on my old car )

Old Mk2/3 Rally escort (Ex Colin Bond) with a BDA Engine and 55mm Webers doing about 9,500 rpm up a hill at a Wirrina Rally sprint in SA about 10 years ago.
Another one was at one of the Clipsal 500's they had a whole lot of vintage F1 cars, and one of the meaner sounding cars was a H16 (BRM I think ?). The engine config is really weird, but basically take a 4 cyl in line and lay it on its side (crank running fore-aft), do a mirror along the crank c/line so you have a boxer 8 cyl, and then stick another on top. Basically had two cranks and sopunded very interesting to say the least

So far i'd have to agree with the Audi and the BRM they sound awesome. There are a few new cars that sound good, but a lot of them sound aweful, would anyone agree that the 4cylinder BMW's from the late 80's early-mid 90's sound absolutely aweful with an aftermarket exhaust? I've heard a few and they just get to that certain rev range and just go all narley and sound absolutely dreadful. Having said that there is a late 80's one getting around Canberra that has what i think one of the best sounding engines in it, and yes it is a rotary. Now before you start going on, this is a 3rotor 600hp turbocharged 20B motor which if you dont know much about rotaries sounds completely different to the love/hate sound of the common 2rotors. It sounds like a mix of a speed boat/v8/aeroplane and sounds awesome. It's more of a muffled roaring sound than anything else. Which brings me to one of my next favourite sounding engines, speedboats!! Sorry i dont know what motor the ones i heard were running but there are a few speedboats i have heard that sound absolutely fantastic, i know the water muffles the sound and gives them a gurgly sorta noise but they sound absolutely awesome. Also i gotta give credit to my dad's PRB Clubman that runs the old BDA escort crossflow style 4cylinder, with yep, two big fat webbers hanging off the side, that sounds sweet. Then there's the 4rotor Mazda 787B that won LeMans in 1991, with over 700hp from a naturally-aspirated 2.6 litre rotary. i have a file of this http://www.mymazdarotary.com/mazda_rotary_general/ 787b/787b_videos/787b_entry.mpg (there's lots more on the net just look around)
Some of you may not like this one because the motor is soo worked it sounds like a rotary on idle again, but if the 3 or 4 rotor motors aren't ported like that then they sound like a jet just awesome. (especially turbocharged versions.)

Forget all these modern engs and blow off valves the best eng noise is any motor that has webbers hanging of the side of them.
I just love the sound they make under hard acc.

You'll like my brothers rally car sound then - twin 45mm webers on a 2L pinto, biggest mofo 4-2-1 extractors I've ever seen fit into an escort engine bay, and 2.25" from there with one not-so-restrictive muffler
Of course, it sounds about ten times faster than it actually is. Only makes around 155hp?

That M3 is just pulling so many revs - would love to hear something like that up close...not bad for a standard car either!
What engine is in that 45? 7MGE/GTE?
That 787B has got a nuts engine, but I never really got into the buzzy rotor engine sound thing? Having said that, you're right it's got a completely different note to the usual street 2 rotors.

turboes, in general, sound pretty crappy. ruins the exhaust note to some degree. Not taht I dont love the deep roar of my turbo supra, but I recognise it doesn't quite have the pure note of an n/a engine

thats true, you can't compare the whole note of the n/a all the way to the redline, but theres just something about the whole turbo spooling up on boost that facinates me..

Still waiting fellas
Good thing about FI engines is that they rev really hard. Even turbos. They all have very high air flow despite the restriction in the turbo.

those old Audi 5 Cyls sound AMAZING.
My brother had a 1982 Audi 5+5 (5cyl thing) and it sounded fucking sick.
My favorite sounding car... hrm, my car sounds fucking sweet with a good exhaust on it... the new VW R32s sound even better.
At the procar GT events the VW R32 is the LOUDEST car there. Such a massive rumble
