Only the very late model MT(X)-8's were laptop compatible as they were basically LT(X)'s.
You will need a hand controller to check the version, one will display MT on the splash adn the other will be LT.

Don't you need the 'special' dongle from Microtech to do this as we were talking about today Sideshow? And Trevor, I think it is correct that you cannot interface (?terminology?) the MTX-8 with a laptop - only LTX-8's have this feature.
(Oh yeah, that belt info is still coming!)
Cheers,
Jeremy.

Ok lets clear a few things up ..Everything is fine on my old computer just plug it in and away it goes.... Now the new computer does not have a Serial port only a USB one So you have to buy a Serial Adapter l have bought two !!!one $40 other $80 there must be a special brand ... l have been told that there are software problems with these leads but someone must have had this same problem and has bought a cable that works .....

I had to change the port setup ie the usb serial port came up as com 4 on my new laptop, so I change the setting so that the belkin (yes that's the one I use) was com 2 and what ever was com 2 , change to com 4, and then I could talk to the autronic which only allowed a choice of either com 1 or Com 2 communcation setting of the tuning software, Mircotech have the same ie you chose com 1 or 2.

Version 2 does allow this and you need the dongle...
