DIY Diagnostic Port ? Mon, 14 June 2004 23:47 Go to next message
G'day everyone.
I am working on a 1G-GZE installation into my RA23.

Toyota's EFI engines have that diagostic port in the engine bay and when you bridge the right terminals, you get the engine check light to flash any error codes.

What I want to know is two things:

1. What happens at a Toyota Dealer when he plugs into this port ? Does it just list any error codes on a bigger screen with some fancy words? Very Happy Is the device interactive in that test programs can be run from the Toyota 'computer' via this port to do some 'real-time' testing and fault finding ?

And:

2. Is it worth buying a plug to fit this port and rigging up a 'idiot' light to determine any error codes at home, given that the RA23 is a little too young to have a check engine light ?

Thanks everyone for your input. Tech info not my speciality !

Cheers,
Mitch.

Mitch,
when my 1J goes in I will be 'adding' a check engine light. I'm not sure about the RA23, but on the MA61 analogue instrument cluster there are a couple of 'spare' indicator lamp places (down near the handbrake & brake lights). All I need to get is the check engine lamp transfer (ie the little picture that sits in front of the lamp) out of a younger car, stick it over the spare lamp, wire it up and I then hava a functional check engine lamp.
If you want to take it further, you could look at one of these http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/techtom/index.htm l , although I don't know if they are available for the 1G. Given the time & info I would like to knock one up myself.

Regards

Peter

I've got a check engine light as part of my GA61 digital dash. I plan to hook that up.

basicly it can tell you everything about your car...rpm, speed, tps, air flow etc. etc.

i had sidey from sideshow performance wiring hook a snapon diag tester on my 20V and gave me read outs for a variety of things. It can also check for fault codes.

Thanks guys, all of this is good info.

For those wiring up a check engine light, how will you source the signal for it ? From the "W" pin in the diagnostic port ?

I think I might drop Sideshow a line.
Cool
Cheers,
Mitch.

Great, I will flip the lid on the ECU and look for the W pin there. I like the idea of rigging it up to one of the globes in the "OK Monitor" dashboard panel warning light thingo....
Maybe get a clear decal on the front of it that says "Engine" or "Warning Warning Danger Will Robinson" or something like that !
Cheers,
Mitch.

Don't know if this applies to the 1G or not but this may be interesting for you.

Too rich for me !
I think I will just take a wire from the W pin of the ECU, rig up a fixed test light in the engine bay, connect the two and when I bridge the diagnostic port terminals I will count the flashes while looking at the motor.
Cheers,
Mitch.

Mitch

The W pin on the ECU switches to earth. As advised earlier in this post just fit a globe into one of the spares spots near the brake warning switch, connect one side to live and the other side to the W pin. Then all will be revealed. To check the codes chech the translation that I put in the Tech Docs. If you need more info give me a ring.
