i built one of these, although mine's a dick smith one, same difference. My car kept fouling plugs in the carpark, i mean south eastern freeway, whilst driving home everyday from school.
It would slowing misfire here and there until there was pretty much no go below about 2000 revs, had to fan the clutch. Give it a few seconds on full throttle would clear the plugs, but this is impossible to do in traffic.
Built the box, installed the next day, runs like a dream, no more fouling and points will last forever, well alot longer than usual. This is on a 4AG running dual Dellorto 40's that I jetted and still hasn't been checked for correct mixtures.

wait a second don't the high energy ignition kits just replace the coil and thats it? don't affect the dizzy or anything like that?
if so then i'm getting one for sure

ahhh i was thinking of the programmable ignition
i think you need the high energy ignition kit to run the programmable ignition kit.

The ignition kit just replaces the dizzy! Well it still uses the dizzy for telling when to fire each plug! Its just that the spark does'nt go through the points anymore!

does that mean you have to readjust the timing once installed?

I have used the Universal High Energy Ignition Kit! This is just a matter of building it up and slapping it in place! No tuning or ajusting needed as all it does is replaces the points in the dizzy!

Silicon chip magazine did these articles,
Programmable Ignition Timing Module for Cars Pts 1&2 -june/july1999
Universal High Energy Ignition System - june 1998
Programmable Electronic Ignition System For Cars - march 1996
i know you can order old issues so email them and ask them how much it costs to get one and so forth if your interested.

You guys are getting a little mixed up ere.
The HEI kit alone will make the ignition burn stronger (to help with cold starts and fouling plugs), and will cause ign points to last MUCH longer (increasing time between tune ups).
The HEI + Programmable Ign module will do the above plus allow you to easily tune the ignition timing via a keypad (instead of playing with the dizzy). Beware though, the Programmable Ign kit only allows for a very crude igniton map (3 points from momory), no where near the accuracy of commercial ign modules. But its still an improvment on the standard distributor timing.
If your a little more psycho, look at:

well i've decided i'm going to get the jaycar universal high energy ignition kit as it may increase engine performance but stgop my plugs fouling in short trips to school whilst running a rich mixture and i like the idea of the points lasting much longer as mine don't last very long normally but before i do is there any downsides or bad points i should know about the kit before i get it?

Contrary to Joels boost to my ego I know very little about these at this point other than this....
I have one in the KE70 and it makes a huge difference to how smooth the engine runs and how well it starts, the spark is much improved over just the points (it hurts a lot more than just with the points,,dont ask me how I know!). I took the system off the 4K that was originally in the car and it is now being used for the 4AC that took its place with no ill effects and just a matter of ataching one wire back on to the dizzy (the rest was already setup) I may even use this with the new engine, but im not sure yet as I still have to read thru the litriture I have here to understand how it works properly but an upgrade to adjustable timing is a consideration in the future.
