Thermostat?

Hey guys,
My friend was driving his Magna down to Canberra. Anyway, I look across at his dash (since he's pretty new to driving) and I notice the temperature gauge sitting below cold.
I told him to pull over. Popped the bonnet and the radiator was freezing cold.
Anyway, sitting there for a while, the temp gauge started to creep up.
We started driving again and the temp gauge dropped down again.
Been driving around the last few days and the car takes a long time for the needle to go up, and doesn't go up that much.
I'm suspecting that the thermostat is stuck wide open. Would this be right?

Is it unhealthy for the car to be running this way?
I'm thinking that it prolly is, especially on the freeway...

the way an engine is built is that it has all these little gaps and tolerences and so forth so when the engine is all warm and at operating temperaturte everything then has the right amount of gap and so forth, so for an engine to run best and have less wear it wants to be running at operating temperature and plus by the sounds of it the engine is running very cold and therefore the oil isn't even getting to operation temp.
i'd say you want to fix the problem or at least fill it with a very low number oil.

probably not healthy for your wallet, as the ECU runs open-looped together with rich mixture, trying to warm up the engine to 80-82 degrees, but never reaches 80 degrees.. waste petrol..
