you have probably seen from my recent posts that i am geting a 3TGTE in a TA22... what i want to know are your opinions on the standard oil cooler that comes woth the motor...
firstly is the oil cooler standard or were there variations of the motor without it?
secondly can i get rid of it? if so is that recommended or should i leave it there?
i dont want tech info on it cause i know what its for, just after opinions and stuff
thanks

Definitely don't get rid of it; all turbo engines will benefit from an oil cooler.

I heard there was 2 versions of the 3TGTE, there was one with a watercooler turbo, and one which wasn't water cooled.
I also heard the water cooled version didn't have an oil cooler.
But I think the above might be all speculation/rumor as I brought a stock 3t-gte in a frontcut unmodified which had watercooled turbo and an oil cooler.
Sorry not much help!
But I left it there and never considered removing it.

I can confirm the early oil cooled 3T GTE's had an oil cooler and the water cooled versions didnt have them.
The later ones have a different oil filter housing that blocks off the original feed line to the oil cooler.
Keeping or adding a cooler is always going to be better, if you do remove the cooler from the early version you need to take the expanding valve from teh oil filter housing as it shuts off the oil supply to the turbo at 80 C and then diverts it to teh cooler. OBviosuly if there is no cooler, there will be no oil going to the turbo = a very short turbo life,
Cheers,
Simon
