which oil for 1jz? Wed, 16 June 2004 02:36 Go to next message
Have to buy some new oil today and was wondering what people are using? synthetic, semi-synthetic etc? What viscosity? I had Repsol 10W 30 in it before.

From all the reading I have done, it seems that getting the BEST (ie. most expensive) oil is not always the best idea as you can just run a cheaper oil and change it more often.

So what do you think?

Use the manufacturer's recommended viscosity, buy a well-known and respected brand of oil, and most importantly, change the oil and filter frequently. You're going to get dozens of opinions on which specific brand of oil is the "best", but the brand means fuck-all (provided it's not cheap shit of course); the three points above are all that matters IMO.

the only problem is I don't know what the recommended viscosity is. I thought it was 10W30 but I was also told it was 15W30 so does anyone know what it is, and I can choose from there.

thanks

Mobil 1 5w 50

or if you are like me and are sick of paying $60 for 5 litres...

Then try penzoil - same viscosity - funny but if you buy this over the counter it is labelled as "family car" or something. I only found this out after the 3rd time of refilling from a 200 litre drum (had to buy a top up away from the workshop).

The change to penzoil has stopped any smoke from valve stem seals as well.

Highly recomended by a lot of 1j boys i know.

Id personally run penrite hpr 30 in winter and hpr 40 in summer

i wouldnt reccomend using mobil 1 on a used turbo engine as i think it runs them "too" clean...and you can end up with glazed bores and all sorts of dramas. Its designed for new engines to keep them clean and running well - its synthetic oil remember.

Mineral oils such as penrite will keep it running the way it is supposed to.

blake

I may end up using mobil 1 or something similar in my v8 yet - the engine is brand new, so i am going to be seeking advice on appropriate oils first. I was told about a BM oil, but its $14/ Litre. And when mine will take about 9L im not gonna be wanting to spend quite that much Razz
