thermal wrapping for exhaust

Does anyone know where to get it from and how much it usually is?
I don't have a heat shield so I think I will need it.

Urgh...I wouldn't recommend using this stuff on an exhaust manifold. It's okay to wrap around certain things that get hot, but the exhaust manifolds themselves tend to rot when you put this stuff on.
You would definitely be better off getting your exhaust manifold ceramic coated - yes it's expensive - but if you want to do things right, it's best to do them right the first time rather than waste a whole exhaust manifold and the wrapping just to prove a point

are you talking about the section of exhaust from exhaust port to the turbo?
I was going to wrap the dump pipes until the firewall. same thing apply to them?

Yep, ceramic coating is the best for that area. I got my dump pipe HPC coated; it's expensive but it works heaps better than thermal wrap and lasts forever. Anyway it's cheaper than a melted steering rack that's for sure!

while i totally agree with you guys, if you have a shit manifold already, then wrapping is a good intermediate thing until you get new pipes...
autospeed actually have damn good prices for it too.. i got some 1" and 2" for use at uni... DON't get the 1" as it's a pain to wrap pipes with.. 2" or wider is so much better.
i would DEFINITELY NOT recommend it for turbo manifolds or dump pipes, as it starts to melt around 600C.. is usually ok for NA tho.
Chris, if you have a new manifold/dump pipe, save the $50 or so for wrap and get them properly coated... better insulation, lasts longer, protects the pipes from corrosion.... just all around better.
but yeah, as a stop gap to prevent other shit melting before getting new pipes.. why not

heat wrap tape, look for a boiler maker, it'll be much cheaper
if only i knew before i lagged my headers, i got the energy stuff, only just managed to cover my 4-2-1 extractors down to the end of the primaries.

im a boiler maker
the heat mats used by boiler makers and welders are pretty much the same stuff but the big difference is the stuff we use at work comes in 1 meter squares or bigger! so unless you dont mind cutting it up and having a ragged edge visible all the way down the pipework use proper tape.
your better off getting a heat shield made up for the parts you want to protect and then getting your new pipework ceramic coated

would it be alright to get one of my dump pipes ceramic coated and just wrap the other one. Because the other one doesn't have a flange to remove it from the rest of the exhaust.
I don't really want to get a heat shield made as I doubt the turbos will be staying there for a long time.

thermal wrap melts at about 600-700 degrees C
if you get the manifold/turbo/pipes above this (e.g. red hot) for a reasonable amount of time (like i did) you turn the wrap into glass
looks pretty neato afterwards but the actual event is kind of frightening
rather than shield the pipe, shield the sensitive stuff?

aah ok gotcha. Just need to get some sort of heat resistant thing like the wrap or a shield on the things near the dump pipes and leave them as they are.
thanks

I got the thermo tape from repco, 2"x15mtrs for seventy bucks.
I think the thing to remember is when you do budget with the wrappings you use, is to read the instructions. A lot of people don't know that when using this tape they should also seal it.
The recommended sealer is VHT flame proof to 1200 deg F. Then you go through the 30 minute curing process.

If you want some really really good heat wrap, Give KCF Rallysport a call. They have some nice really thick stuff.
If you want some and get a price from Keith there, just tell him Shane sent ya He probably wont mail the stuff to you so you'll have to pick it up or arrange something with me.
