Custom Exhaust Wed, 16 June 2004 03:03 Go to next message
I'm gonna make a custom 3inch exhaust for my 1ggte, but i was just wondering, Will all i need be a single hi-flow cat and single rear muffler, or might I need an extra muffler somewhere??

A guy at the local exhaust shop said somethin about an extra muffler, but obviously i'd prefer a single cause theres less air restriction.

Any suggestions or examples of what u guys have done??

should only need one muffler as the turbos seem to quieten it down a lot. my old 1g only had one muffler and wasn't very loud at all.

if it is too loud add a resonator.

Just to add a question to this cornacopia of info. I have a 1GGTE Ra23 and was wondering if any of you guys can recommend a good exhaust place to get it done, and also if they will need the car or can they do it up off previous specs. My car is not driveable without an exhaust, so I don't want to incur towing costs. Called a few places and they all wanted to see the car first.
Thanks lads,
Steve

I run 1 DECENT muffler, and one full legnth resinator, no probs with noise and it produces a nice note. P.S oval mufflers will muffle more sound than a straight through round muffler, something to consider when choosing style of muffler.

Yeah sounds good fellas...

Sorry man, my car is a cressida. By the way I can get 3inch mild steel piping for $15 per metre and mandrel bends for $22 a metre. That means it'll only cost me around $320 for my full exhaust including hi-flow cat and straight thru muffler.

Sounds good to me, but i spose a professional job will always be better quality. Oh well somethin to think about

How do you figure that, a proper 3" high-flow cat will nearly eat up most of that on it's own, let alone a decent muffler.

On ebay, u can get a straight thru 3inch inlet stainless muffler 4 $130 delivered. Also, u can get a hi-flow 3inch cat for $100 delivered. This is a good brand too, car sound magnaflow.
I also do the welding myself. Smile

Sounds like you have sorted out what you want to do and basically answered your own question.
The on-line Auto-speed magazine has a free to view all pages comparison of most mufflers available in Australia.

The 'other' muffler the guy talked about is a resonator, and that sits between the cat and the muffler.
Careful with your choice as many mufflers than claim quiet sounds are very flow restrictive and can be louder than straight through systems.

Autospeed listed the Genie Tornado muffler as best for flow and good quiet sound. They also said the Genie straight through Resonator was the best for that item as well.

Maybe this helps, maybe not.
Mitch.
