The main issues will be parts availability and rust in the sills.
The 7R will have the same problem as the 18R - timing chains need to be religiously serviced otherwise they snap and cause you a world of pain.
You would do well to remove (and store should you ever wish to return it to original) the 7R and drop in an 18RG - should be a bolt up proposition and the old school DOHC wouldn't look too out of place in the engine bay. I have a sneaking suspicion that the 4 speed is an early W40 so a 5 speed W50 would work just fine.

The HUGE problem is finding one at all let alone one that is not a rusting wreck ..Tell your mate to really think again about treating it hard..If he tells you to p' off and mind your own business..ask him where all the 48-215(FX)/FJ/FE/FC/FB/EK/EJ/EH Holdens went and the Ford Single and Twin spinner Mainline utes and Customline sedans and the tough little Datto 1600's and the XM/XP 2 doors and the S and R Type Valiants and the thousands of early V dubs and mini 850's and earlier all the Chevs and Fords and Dodges and Pontiacs and Hudsons and Willys that just got "hot rodded" into total extinction in this country...Hillmans and Morris and Singers and Sunbeams and MG's and Rovers and Austin A40's and A30's...the list goes on and on..gone and can never be replaced..
I admit to killing more than a few before I realised the finality of it all ..
I am not suggesting they were all pinnacles of motoring excellence but they were just old cars that people woke up too late were sort of classics of their time..
