Group Buy - Close Ratio T50 Gear Sets from Albins Gear

Greetings All, Organising for a group buy that will go ahead in 9-12months.

Will suit the following vehicles that came standard with T50 gearboxs. (please check your under hood badge to verify you have this gearbox.)
AE86 Corolla Levin/Sprinter Trueno, TA22/TA23/TA27 Celica, KE70 series RWD corolla's, Some other KE series Corolla's, 82-83 Carina (3A/1S/2T-GE/3T-E), 83 Celica (3T-E,2T-GE), 82 Corona (1S) etc.

Upfront Notes: Holinger havent made gear kits for T50's for at least 10 years (they were Syncro), Quaife still make gear kits for them but you are looking at $7000 Australian plus plus. TRD gear sets that replace either the 1st 2 gears or 1st 3 gears cost 140,000Yen++ approx $1,900Aud and 210,000Yen++ approx $2,800Aud See: www.toyota-trd.com/en/comp/drive.html

As taken from Phil Bradshaws site.

------------------------

Notes in plain English:
- All Albins gears are Syncromesh
- Like all gear kits, you will need to get a mechanic or your self to disassemble your gearbox and reassemble it. Albins do not do this. This is a group buy for the gear sets only, not gearbox's. The gears replace your existing gears in your gearbox.
- They need you to send the cluster shaft and 1st/2nd and 3rd idlers, 3rd must have a dogring which is in good condition as they reuse it. Price for the 1st and 2nd sets is $570 each and 3rd is $450. Turn around for the gearsets which we have in stock is about 2 weeks and if they have to make any ratios time would be about 12 weeks. (Maybe have a contact person in each state to collect these things, when it comes close to the time, do a group send. cut cost of postage, Volenteers anyone?)

Final Note:
The more people who can save and do the group buy, the beter the discount we get.

i have an Albins set in a T50 box and they are noisy as buggery, but the ratios are great. they were professionally installed by previous owner of 1 of my cars. I have been told others have reasonably good (quiet) Albins sets but i have yet to experience this. Patrick, I would be interested if they warrant their product will not be noisy in a road car. As I understand matters, this firm specialises in off-road boxes, where quiet running is not so important. I dont want to dissuade you from such a good idea, but suggest it is well understtod what is being offered, and any limits on their product. I truly hope they will be wonderful!!.
(ps, can you get around to checking those cam buckets so i can pay you for that head--please)

A bit suss calling them close ratio and then comparing them to Quaife, Hollinger etc. Those guys do true competition close ratio gearsets with a 1:1 fifth. This involves some major machine work and hence the price. Not to mention their gearsets are far stronger than stock.

Not saying there is anything wrong with the Albins box but they aren't comparing apples with apples stacking their cheaper box up against the full house gear.

*Terry, Will query albins about the noise.

*Arch, Not sure if you can get away leaving the 3rd gear stock. Will query them about this. The way the gears hit. Using the Albins gear set 3 ratios.. these are the expected power drops.. with a 4.3 ring Pinion. (Not sure I have calculated this right., so no nit pickers please... Using Quaife Speed Calculator.
Tyre:- Michelin all patterns 195/60 x 15
-------------------------------------------------- ---------------
Top Gear gives 26.161 KPH/1000 RPM and a top speed of 183.130 KPH at 7000 RPM

Engine speeds in top gear:-
40 KPH = 1529 RPM 50 KPH = 1911 KPM 60 KPH = 2293 RPM 80 KPH = 3058 RPM
100 KPH = 3822 RPM 110 KPH = 4205 RPM 130 KPH = 4969 RPM 160 KPH = 6116 RPM

Top Speed in 1 gear = 73.252 KPH
And changes into 2 gear at 4900 RPM dropping 2100 RPM
Top Speed in 2 gear = 104.646 KPH
And changes into 3 gear at 5536 RPM dropping 1464 RPM
Top Speed in 3 gear = 132.319 KPH
And changes into 4 gear at 5058 RPM dropping 1942 RPM
Top Speed in 4 gear = 183.130 KPH
************************************************** ***************

I repeat, These are gear sets to replace the existing gears in your current T50 gearbox, Not gear boxs.

*JustenGT4
Sigh..
please look in google for definition of close ratio gears.
Future ignorant/negative comments will be reported to the moderators, Thankyou.

*demuire
The gears are Syncro. As mentioned in the origional post. Albins can make custom 1 off straight cut gear sets but is expensive, approx $9000

I ran one of the Albins boxes behind my 20 valve when I raced it as a 1600, the gears are straight cut (on an angle) an where not noisy at all, these are plenty strong enough after all I did two seasons of racing with it, and the albins stuff was great, had plenty of dogring and syncro problems (just wear related) so that tells you I was hard on the stuff. my supra box has albins ratios in it has new 1st and 2nd and new 3rd and new 5th sounds a bit like a supercharger but mine has broader teeth than a std box and it is a 20% helical cut in the teeth hence the charger noise have run it for years no probs

I have an Albins made set in one of my Close ratio T50's and its FANTASTIC. It can be noisy...Depends on intended use and user.

CelicaRA45 - I wonder where the specs for the TRD T50 ratio's came from??? Probably from a "TRD stickered" T50 or from the so called "friend" who is an agent for TRD.... Rolling Eyes By the way did TRD have stickers for their T50's? Please find me 2 for my boxes - original if possible...Thanks Laughing

Rolling Eyes No shits just clearing up a minor matter and thought it quite interesting that you replied to a posting which mentioned about the existence of TRD T50's. Wonder who should get his facts straight? If promode (whoever that is) had the "shits" you'd definitely know about it!!!

these albins ratios have been out for years promode the trd ratios are still availible ,and mine is a supra box and you can buy trd stickers if you like ,also have a trd supra box as well that came out of a tt163 turbo rally car .but all trd boxes are helical not straight cut as you were selling ,you said unquote the 1st 2 gears are straight cut and the rest are helical so cannot be a trd box

Update: To all who asked questions.

Terry: q1. Query on noise
Quote:

Albinsgear a1: It is a bit hard to say that the gears will be quiet as one person might say this is ok and another may not be happy with even the smallest amount of noise, the gears are all helical cut so the noise should be minimal.

Arch q2: Query on just getting 1st and 2nd gears
Quote:

so i want to ask, if i get just 1st and 2nd,

Albinsgear a2: 1st to 2nd gears only will not be a problem.

demuire q3:
Quote:

Patr1c: Ah, wasn't sure what you meant by Syncromesh, I only knew them as either straight or helical cut...
See q1. Helical Cut.

I asked about a 1:1 5th gear set. this is their responce

We can do a gearset which will have a 1:1 5th, this puts 1st where 5th
was then 1st is 2nd, 2nd is 3rd and 4th turns into 5th i.e. 1:1.
2nd 4th 1st
l l l
l---l---l This is what the shift pattern would be like
with a 1:1 5th
l l l (this picture is the H pattern Shift)
3rd 5th rev

We did this mid way through last year for someone and what we ended up doing is making a gear which is a similar ratio to the standard 1st (approx 3.7:1 I think) to go in 5th position as the new 1st gear then we used our gears(i.e. the ratios I gave you) for the other 3 gears and ended up with a 1:1 5th (in the 4th position) with a good spread of ratios.

Note. Please download info2.txt to see that shift pattern properly. P

Of the three Albins sets listed, has anyone had experience with a certain set?

Keen to find out what might be the pros/cons of each set.

Thanx,

One of the TRD gearsets has a .861 5th, anyone know if Albins can supply this with any of their gearsets

Any indication also of numbers needed and indicated costs allowing for the discount of a group buy.

Aiming for April.
For some understanding.
Gearset 1 seems to be the most popular for track people.
Gearset 3 for rally people

Personally, I will only be changing 2 gears. thats all I can afford.

Have added some Japanese ratios. Please see attached text file.

Umm, this is a silly question, but for some reason (probably cause I'm silly) I'm confused.

Quote:

Synchro Gear Set $570AUD $570AUD $450AUD
T 50 Albins Gear #1 2.39 1.61 1.21 1.00 0.886 3.48
T 50 Albins Gear #2 2.44 1.66 1.24 1.00 0.886 3.48
T 50 Albins Gear #3* 2.51 >1.75 1.28 1.00 0.886 3.48
>1.84*optional for Gear set 3

Does this mean that it's $570 for "Gear #1" with the ratios listed for all 5 gears, and $570 for "Gear #2" (again with all ratios" and $450 for "Gear #3"?

What do you mean by

Quote:

Personally, I will only be changing 2 gears. thats all I can afford.

Since all the gearsets have at least 3 that are different to standard?

As in... If I pay $570, do I get all the bits I need to make up the ratios listed in Gear #1 for all 5 gears? Or is that only for one gear?

its 570 for 1st and 570 for 2nd and 450 for 3rd gear and 450 for 5th also as a note you still have to give them your cluster so they can cut your old gears off the main shaft is fine

Oh right... So the gear set ratios listed are just well, combinations.

So thats $1590 to make any of those gear sets, not including 5th which is almost the same as stock anyway?

No .886 ratio 5th you only lose 300 rpm for every 3500 but with std .860 you lose 500 rpm for every 3500 rpm thats the difference so the engine will keep pulling not just in o/drive mode
