1JZ Into Ta22 Fri, 18 June 2004 04:01 Go to next message
Has anyone got any links or info on fitting a 1JZ into a ta22, ive heard of it being done before, just after some information at this stage, as to what needs to be modified, like cutting firewall, mounts, fuel lines etc. Any info would be of great help, cuz im just weighing up my options

You'll definitely need to cut the firewall or similar major structural mods to get any JZ engine in a TA22. It's a much easier task in an RA23 but the TA22 engine bay is just too small.

question here is why???? if you want to actually be able to drive the car then go for a 3sgte or similar- ligher and still more than enough power for that car. if you want it for drags then i'd have to think it's a waste of time using that shell, as you'd have to replace absolutely everything and could put it into another car that's much easier and well documented

Do it, do it, do it. Big cubes are the go.

It depends on how much work you want to do really. Basically, if the length of the engine bay is more than the motor-it'll fit, however you'll probably need to fabricate the following

Engine mounts
Trans mounts
radiator mount (you'll need a bigger one guaranteed)

Everything else-hoses, brackets, intake piping, intercooler mounts etc, etc will be custom as well.

At the end of the day you'll end up with a car that's great for the drags, but a bit dubious for cornering (just like my crown, but was dubious for cornering before I raped it stupid anyway).

It all depends on what you are after.

Cheers
Sean

Re: 1JZ Into Ta22 Fri, 18 June 2004 12:58 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Actually a 1jz into a ta22 would be ILLEGAL in NSW regardles of which engineer you try to get to pass it as it does not comply to the weight to turbo capacity ruling .
even if you could get it passed

For all the extreme modding involve which would mean a custom crossmember as the engine is WAY to tall to fit under a 22 bonnet .
It would be cheaper to fit a 1ggte and whack on a gt3040 .even with stock ecu it wil runs low to mid 12's and still handle
that would kick some stock 1j butt

Actaully my red Celica is a TA23 same as RA but came stock with 2t not 18r

This rule gets blown out the window once extra chassis bracing is added.

Unless they have recently changed the rules Cool1 then simply adding chassis bracing will not make the car a legal modification in NSW or QLD. The only way to engineer a modification outside the capacity rules is to build an ICV (individually constructed vehicle). In doing so you must comply to current ADR's including the new EURO2 emissions criteria. A very expensive process.

Re: 1JZ Into Ta22 Sat, 19 June 2004 01:29 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Adding a fixed (welded in) cage that extends through the firewall, onto the strut towers and then down to the chassis and at the back extending to the rear of the chassis, will allow me to legally put any engine into my TA22.
But then not many people can put a fitted roll cage with side intrusion bars legally into a street car, so this means not many engineers can approve this.
This is the exact reason there are a few TA22's getting around Brisbane with 1JZ's and 2JZ's in them. Gabba turbos had one there not so long a go.

Re: 1JZ Into Ta22 Sat, 19 June 2004 06:04 Go to previous messageGo to next message
As far as I knew QLD adopted the NSW regs so if that's not the case I stand corrected. 2 engineers I just spoke to (all NSW I must add) would not allow the larger engine with the modification you describe. Here, the 1J swap would most definitely be considered an ICV.

I can understand most engineers saying no to what you have asked. As I said there are not many engineers that can even certify the full rollcage.
