Mounting noise supressor Fri, 18 June 2004 05:39 Go to next message
I just bought a $3 noise supessor from kmart to help cure radio interference on the families car. It has a spade clip that it says to mount to the positive terminal on the alternator and then then attach the little capacitor (or whatever it is) to the alternator body. It sounds easy enough, but the car is a 626 Shocked and the alternator is a c..t to get to (almost have to take off intake manifold). Would it work if I just attached this to the battery instead?

I'm not sure what is causing the interference, but it says is helps reduce interference from ignition and alternator.

THanks.

It needs to be mounted to the source of the noise. If the noise is comming from the alternator then it has to be mounted there. If you cant get to the alternator go spend a few more dollars on a noise filter that goes inline with the radio or what ever you are hearing the noise on.

Thanks cool..sounds logical!
When the antenna goes up there is a shit load of interference. However, this doesn't explain interference when you're driving around with antenna already up. It's only on the AM band. Might have to pull the deck out

If your alternators on the way out then theres almost no amount of filtering that will stop the noise from coming through...

As Cool1 said if you know whats causing the noise then its best to connect the filter directly to it...
but if you don't know then you can try putting it on your head units constant battery connection... this will not work as well though

Another thing you can do is get a power filter type cap and run it in series with your head units power.

These sort of issues really need to be seen (or heard) and tested to be properly diagnosed... If you're going to be around the hills area with the car sometime send me a pm and we can try and sort it out.

Thanks Toobs. I come over the hills area a bit so may take you up on that one day Very Happy . I just don't normally have that car as my mum drives it round all the time. It's been like that since we got the car - 3 years ago. AM is a prick of a band for interference. Just my mum likes listening to the stuff on it.

Yep... AM does suck.

It gets more interference because its a lower frequency... one that is more likely to be affected by electricals.
FM tuners "should" block out any signal thats below 80 odd MHz so most electrical noises won't be heard

AM is more susceptible to noise because of the lack of filtering required.
