What oil to use?

I own I 1987 4ac Corolla. The previous owner used 25w/40. Repco advised me to use 25W/70. Ever since I used the 25W/70 oil I realised the engine has become very noisy (I think its the tappets or lifters) before the oil change the engine use to be noisy only when cold, but now its noisy all the time. The service book recommends using Castrol GTX which is a 15W/40 or 20W/50. Summer is comming up and I want the best protection and least noise from the engine. I sometimes don't have time to warm up the engine 2 times per day so I drive while the engine is still cold. What oil should I use?

Since the weather's started warming up, a thicker oil would be a bit better. You may find on warm days when the engine gets really nice & hot it shouldn't be so noisy.
I was using a 5W-40 oil through winter, & have now changed to a 15W-50, but my engine rarely runs very hot because the radiator works too well. During winter, my car will never reach full operating temperature while driving. I can let it warm up, but once start moving it drops straight down to 60 or so degrees.
The best solution I came up with was to cover half the radiator with a peice of cardboard painted back. Bodgy but effective.

Bigworm: sounds like you have a stuck open thermostat, or maybe you don't even have a thermostat, as running the engine around 60 degrees is not good news, I think the ECU runs in open loop until the engine warms up, the mixture would be rich before it reaches 80-82 degrees which is ideal..

Nah, it's definitely not the 'stat, I tried getting a hottor one to try & solve my probs, but could not get one anywhere (anyone know of one?). I even forked out for a genuine toyota one, in the hope that it may open at a more acurate 82, but still no luck.
It runs a microtech MT8, which does pretty much the same as the standard ECU, and richen the mixture according to the coolant temperature, so it was running hella rich during winter. It's starting to not be such a problem now, at least I won't have to worry this summer.
I think it just comes down to my 4A-GE having a bigger radiator than it was ever meant to, and the cooling system being a bit too efficient.

Hi Bigworm, it shouldn't be the case as I'm using a radiator probably 3-4x of what my engine needs too, I'm running Microtech MTX-8, but the coolant should be trapped "inside" the engine when the water temp is below 82 degrees, so the radiator would have nothing to do with the coolant (that's only if the thermostat is working probably)

It's the standard RA-23 radiator, & it's been cleaned etc and is in very good nick.
gt20v: I underdstand how it's meant to work, it just doesn't like it should. There can be no way the 'stat isn't working properly, I've replaced it enough times.
From the way I see it, the water in the motor is at 82 (or close enough) and starts flowing out, and the water coming into the motor from the radiator is much cooler & manages to bring down the temp at the temp probe (other end of the motor to the 'stat).
