Seized my 2ZZ-GE

Don't you just love a post with a title like that....
driving along fairly quickly on a twisty road, I hear a knocking noise from the engine on my celica. I was a couple of kays from home - so I thought...I'll nurse it home slow and see what it is. Got about 500m down the road and the engine seizes. Trust me, it's the worst feeling in the world. Seeing the celica on the back of a tow truck wasn't something I want to replicate...
I had a look at some celica forums and apparently these engines have a bit of propensity to bend exhaust valves. That scares me - with all that variable lift stuff in there - it's probably going to need a new head, etc...I don't think it's going to be cheap to fix.

you reckon? I That engine is going to be expensive. come to think of it, I can't recall ever seeing one at a wreckers - or a front cut.
I'll be ringing wreckers on monday though....
I'm just hoping the bottom end isn't too damaged. The bores on those motors are only 5.5mm apart, and they are metal matrix. Apparently you can't overbore them at all.

if its seized, you must have grabbed a bore with a piston or something..in which case throw away the engine!

if you have to throw it away, would you like to donate it to charity i'm keen to see how one of these could fit up to an old corolla
if you can, pull the engine down and see whats wrong...
pull off cam covers and see if valves still move, then pull the head and see if the bottom end turns over..
yup, being an alloy block, the bores are usually high silicon and if overbored become much less wear resistant..
good luck!!

Switch1 on the newcelica.org forum had his engine seize too. He misshifted and overreved the engine, then when toyota repaired it, they stuffed something up then it seized a few weeks later. They quoted him a fortune to fix it.
He ended up getting a complete new engine for 2.5k. Best of all it had only had 800m on the clock!!!
http://www.newcelica.org/forums/showthread.php?s=& amp;threadid=130792
The place that sourced the engine for him was called Bezerkly automotive (http://www.bezerkly.com/) and that may be your best bet to get things sorted if your car is not under warranty :)

2000 model Celica... 3 years warranty... Any chance you have extracare???
Either that or see a Toyota dealer and try a warranty approach... This will only go through if you have had all your services done at 10,000km intervals and never missed one...
We had an Avalon at work a few weeks ago... 40,000kms, never been serviced... Siezed... Oil sludgy as... Engine requires rebuild and no warranty...
Best bet for you if warranty is not an option, source a new head from Japan... That ofcourse if the head is the problem...

Just an update...
I took it to a toyota dealer - they pulled the motor out of the car, it has destroyed the big end bearing on No.1 Piston, and in doing so, damaged the rod, crank and main caps. Apparently the bores are ok. It is out of factory warranty 3yr/100000km) but the dealer is putting in an out of warranty claim on toyota (as the car only has 68000kms on it) to see if they can get the cost of fixing it paid by them.
I have been told to fix they have to replace the entire short motor (it's cheaper than buying a crank, caps, rods and assembling it) and that is going to cost $3500 (ballpark). The head is apparently ok...thankgod. I'm going to go and have a look at it tomorrow - If I can I'll take some pics.

Fingers crossed that you get it paid for!
so... do you get to keep the block??
if so, i'll give you a few $$ for it (or borrow?) and you keep all good bits...
i am really really keen to see how these fit in KE10's
good luck with it!!

Toyota didn't even want to talk to me when mine was 6 months out of warranty, only had 60,000km on it and the engine 'blew'.

I doubt I'll ever get to keep the dead parts.
Why would you want to put this in a KE10? Isn't a KE10 rear wheel drive? No RWD gearbox exists to bolt up to this, so you'd need to make a custom bellhousing, etc...

You could put a 3s-fe in it, mines done 206,000 and hasn't siezed.
Seriously that really sucks, it might be a common design flaw.

>>>I doubt I'll ever get to keep the dead parts.
bugger.
>>>Why would you want to put this in a KE10?
because i like to be a little different, amd the spec of the motor appeal to me.. 180Nm at 6000+rpm, current emissions.
>>>Isn't a KE10 rear wheel drive? No RWD gearbox exists to bolt up to this, so you'd need to make a custom bellhousing, etc...
and this is a problem how?

Good news guys...very good news.
Toyota is covering the parts for the engine 'malfunction'. Which is $6500 worth of parts. I have to pay the labour, $1700. Pretty good dor a car 1 year 2 months out of warranty...
I was pretty pleased (a bit of an understatement). Apparently I'll have the car back end of next week/early the week after.
