because the car is from 1984 it doesn't require one, yet if you do an engine conversion to an unleaded engine you are required to run all the emmissions gear that was on the car the engine came from.

The aussie ma61 never got a 5mge
What model 5mge do you have?
The early 8.8:1c/r, twin alt belt?
Or the later 9.2:1c/r, ribbed alt belt?
If its the early one, it came from a jspec ma61, and no cat required
if its the later one, then it came from an aussie cressida, and a cat is required

thats crap blake...
what your car originally came with has nothing to do with emission req's of the new engine going in.
as mentioned above, the install of the new engine must include ALL emissions gear that THAT engine originally came specced with. in this case, if the 5mge is unleaded out of a cressy - it needs a cat.

FWIW when I put the 6M-GE in my MA61 and got a blue plate for it (ie engineering), nothing was said about a cat. I'm not saying a cat isn't legally required, just telling you my experience.

thankyou, thats what i wanted yo know
but the only problem is, its hard to tell. because the engine know has ribbed pulleys, but the previous owner thinks it may have been twin belted, but can't remember.
is there any other way to tell?

Umm, the difference I *think* are there.
early = square 3 pin TPS
late = round 4 pin TPS
early = vacuum advance dizzy
late = electronic advance dizzy
early = no o2 sensor
late = yes o2 sensor
early = 2 or more vacuum connections on TB
late = only 1 vacuum connection on TB
I think there are more, but that should provide enough to check

thanks champ!
still confused tho,
as it has an oxy sensor, square tps, a 5me vacuum dizzy, a 2 vacuum lines (haynes manual has some later models with 3 connections)

I asked myself the same question when doing my conversion, said 'bugger it' and bought a cat for peace of mind.

99% sure its a temp sensor for when it overheats/blocks.
You don't need it.
I'm 90% sure the globe wasnt even in my dash.

correct me if i'm wrong, but don't the EPA require a catalytic converter to be installed on all cars that are running unleaded petrol?
i may have a 1972 car with a 1979 engine, neither of which require a cat, but i'd bet that if i got emissions tested i'd have my ass handed to me because i use bp ultimate with no catalytic converter (hell i barely have an exhaust on the thing )
that being said, fook (from fookstar.com) bought my last ke35 (now with 4age and rollcage) isn't running a cat and he got emissions tested and passed no worries

Most exhaust shops will tell you to take a hike if you ask them to remove a catalytic converter... they get hit with horrendously large fines if they're caught. I doubt anyone would take the risk for the sake of a $50 cut-and-shut job.

Just get the cat installed, and get a bit of pipe with the same flanges + length of the cat, for those "track days"...
