URGENT : AE86 4A-GE EFI Fuel Pump Replacement Options?
|

have read on google, club 4ag, billzilla's site, and searched in here but to no avail...
so heres the story to give you all a little background:
friday night: went to BEL Performance and replaced the fuel filter and the starter motor. at the same time some nice custom grounding leads for the engine. after a few 'primes' to 'ignition' to get the fuel into the new filter she starts (and what a start so so much better)
so i leave and test drive to the city, seems all good. give a squirt, response and power seems awesome with the new grounding leads! so off home i go, cruising in 4th doing 80kms.
THEN the car sputters (like its out of fuel) and no pedal response and then dead.. coast to a stop, hazards on and try to start. she cranks but doesn't turn over. call ben @ BEL (2am, what a guy..) who guides me though a diagnosis. we then think the tank is dry. i go and get fuel (by way of nice passer by) and top it up (3 jerry cans and 15L of premium...)
put that in the tank and fire it up, cranks but doesnt turn over. still no luck. prime the engine, no pump whine and click, check the injectors, not getting a "whine" when ign is switched on. so we think pump is fucked. OK. so i organise a towie ... 4 hrs later one shows up.....
so saturday i check the pump with a test light, pump is getting power so no love for the fucked pump. saturday night i drop the tank pull the pump with help of justinfox. ghetto style with phone books and a jack, ahah. but shes out.
now the questions.
i have a ae86 EFI tank and an ae86 EFI pump. having the rare bits already (being the bracket and the tank) will the ae86 pump be the only option to fit into it or is the bracket setup to easily fit a universal type pump which can be found easily at repco, auto-1 or other "parts" shop.
what other pumps (if any) will straight fit onto a ae86 efi bracket into an ae86 efi tank WITHOUT modification? and where can one purchase such pump urgently

maybe not what you want to here but i would modify it to suite a different type of pump, one which is more readily available so when it dies again later it will be cheap and easy to replace. shouldnt be vray hard to modify the bracket to suite.

by modify, all you really need to do is get another pump to sit on the bracket, you could just use cable ties then with the wires just put new connectors on if needed. i dont know what pump is appropriate since i always like to use external pumps. maybe a V6 commodore pump?
just a thought, what are the pumps in the SX corolla's like? wouldnt they be very similar to what you want?

okay good point.
lets see if theres an easy 'slot-in' replacement before we go doing that.
zip ties would work, about 80 of em to be sure.
the only thing that matters if the height of the fuel filter pickup inside the tank right?

yeah i should think so, and ofcourse must flow as much as or more than the original pump.
id go to auto pro/auto one/repco etc and get them to bring out an SX rolla pump and compare, then if you cant get one that fits id look into a commo pump.

I hate giving good people bad news.
I believe the aw11 pump was similar, but once again slight modification needed to ensure correct fittment.
I think you'll struggle to get a different pump (other then an original) to be a straight fit.
As EVOSTi has suggested, find a pump similar in size and work from there, im sure there will a few pump similar in size, its only a 4cyl.
Cheers

many options.... AE82, AE92 intank will work, you may need to lengthen the rubber hose on the inside of the bracket to the pump but they will both work well, AW11 mr2 will also work, for a bigger pump try an MX83 or a late Crown pump, they "should" fit through the tank opening and again all you should need to do is lenghten or shorten the rubber hose.. and/or drill out the rivet for the earth and make a longer earth line. you should eb able to use the earth of those two pumps and just re-rivet into the brackets existing hole after drilling the old earth out.

*sigh*
this sucks
would the ae82 pump fit with small amount of modification to hoses and bracket??
where does the fuel collector fit on the ae82 pump? on the bottom under or the side?

first point.
your a legend
second point.
the rubber hose shorten/lengthen is a no brainer. thats easy enough. earls hose will be good enough?
im not looking for bigger pump at this stage. when i want bigger ill get a walbro 255 pump from usa. so an ae82 will do for now.
with an ae82 pump (which i can get fairly easily) ill need to lengthen the hose (because the unit is more 'squat' than the ae86 one?) and lengthen the ground cables to reach? will the ae82 cables be long enough to reach the top of the bracket? they are riveted on? not screwed? if they are not included what sort of wire do i need to buy for the job?
also is there anything else i need to do? same engine so the flow rates will match correct?
it is safe to drill the rivet out when the fuel bracket has "dried" the fuel over 2 days right? not going to exploder anything by doing so?

Please tell me this isn't the one Pete has, it's almost loud enough to drown out his 1UZ! Surely the Bosch ones are quieter!

Loud is fine dude, but a fuel pump whine sounds shit, and when you're drowing out the sound of a cool engine/exhaust, its a crying shame!

so!
tonight ae86slut, the fine hachi driver that he is, *gave* me his ae82 twincam pump
so i took it home and compared it to mine. 99% identical!
only differences are in the filter and the base grommet (which are interchangeable!!).
and of course (as you do) i took pics!
see below

the grommets arent shown in the picture. but each different grommet fits either pump. so use the grommet to fit the bracket, not the grommet to fit the pump. also the filters are also interchangeable too!
this basically means i have fuck all work to do. makes me happy. the pump body is identical wth the terminals and 'nozzle' and height is also the same.
so tomorrow i should be back on the road!! YES!

You mean "Sprinter" as in JDM EFI AE86 right?
The AE92 pump that I put in my Sprinter is a bit different to the one's shown above. The inlet is in the middle of the end of the pump as opposed to towards the edge as seen above and the filter is a lot thinner and tapers to flat at the end as seen in my pics above.
Anyways, glad to be of assistance Garth!
Cheers,
Jeremy.

yes the filter tapers, as you say, as opposed to the picks shown, ive never seen an ae86 filter like that one before, usually they taper like the ae92, but all the pickup points are ususally the same spot, sorta on the outer edge.. and as far as im aware almost all the filters are interchangeable, personally i would have left the bigger filter on than changing the ae86 one over but hey thats just me

1. its because its a JDM efi filter for a JDM EFI tank. i spose
2. i would have put the bigger one on but the fabric 'filter' material on the JDM one was finer smaller holes so it would filter better. so i left it. its not always bigger = better.

one point in the walbros favour is that they are bloody small... and the 190 and 255L/hr ones are exactly the same external size... make it very easy to swap...
i have one of each if you wanna measure..... for later....
