 Cheap and easy mods for AE93 'Rolla GTi?

Hi all,
Just looking for some cost effective mods for a '91 GTi. I am only looking for little power/torque gains, just so the car is a little faster... I am only looking for bolt on and easily reversible stuff. On a tight budget too.
Spotted some nice K&N filter kits on the 'net. Any good?

I suppose just do the usual sports air filter/exhaust/extractors then maybe later on cams. I wouldn't recommend an air pod. But at the end of the day the cheapest big power upgrade would an engine swap

Air Filter, Cold air induction (cheapest), Cat Back exhaust (2.25"), Extractors+middle pipe+high flow cat, Shaved Head, Cams, Chipped ECU.
In that order. When you have the $. Easy.

Cool, that sounds pretty logical. One query however, After I get the new mods installed, will I need the Stock ECU tuned or reprogrammed?
