Alternator regulator on 93 camry Sun, 20 June 2004 11:00 Go to next message
hey everybody, been reading the forums for a while, but dont post much.

Anyway, i have a 93 camry with the 5S-FE motor, and i have just replaced the regulator on the alternator for the second time in around a year. I was just wondering if this is a common problem as i have heard that as toyotas get older, they suffer some electrical problems.

Also, if this isnt a common occurance, what could be causing it to wear so rapidly, and what can i do to rectify it?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks. Smile

well, i noticed the discharge light coming on, at first i ignored it, but as time went on, i noticed the headlights were getting very dim, and at that point i rang around an uncle of mine who is a mechanic at toyota, and he was the one who suggested that the regulator was the problem.

When i took it off, the brush's were very worn, (ie. around 1cm left) considering this was only 1 year old.

can you take a picture of what you are replacing/ having troubles with?

What alternator is it? pics?

I wouldve thought
These alternators should have a "BUILT IN" regulator..ie one you cant see without opening the alternator up.

This is a bosch alternator right?

The brushes will wear out faster if the sliprings are not machined when the new regulator is fitted. The sliprings are the two copper rings that the brushes run on. It is an easy job if you have access to a lathe.

i cbf taking any pics at the moment, but im pretty sure that this is an externally regulated alternator.

Its a bosch alternator.

Here is a pic of a regulator which is similar to the one which is found in the camry.
