Should I?

Hey fellas, pretty new to this forum but I have been following it for ages.
Anyway, I have been scouting for a decent ae86 for some time now and it so happens one popped up in my little town. It is a 1985 model with 250 000kms on it and runs okay. The hatch has rust on it which the guy (a dodgy backyard mechanic)bodged up but its not really bad. The motor is the 4ac and it runs okay. The clutch is on he edge of dieing and the gearbox is okay. The suspension looks to be average and the interior eg the door trim will need replacing. The dash is good and the body is in fairly good condition.... fairly straight. He wanted 1950 for it but as he couldn't get a Safety certificate for it, he went down to $1200. I want to get one an put a 4age 16 or 20v *haven't decided yet), TRD lsd and white line full suspension in it.
Keep in mind the car runs and is driven daily. the interior is excellent apart from door trim... What should I do?
I am on a fairly tight budget but I would like to repaint it, re-trim, new CD player and speakers, 4age, suspension, LSD and maybe a respray and some basic light mags. Is it worth it?
Is this a good price?
the car runs okay - prolly got another 50 000kms in it before something like the clutch dies. Is it worth it????
thanks alot
Gavin

But I'm jsut scared im going to end up ith a dud that is going to cost like 10k to fix... The rust... is that easy to clean up?
how bout a new paint job.. how much am I looking at?
also how much do you think it would be to egt the interior door trim retrimmed?
The car is in below average condition... it looks like an average old corolla that has only been washed 4 times a year.
Do you really think its worth gettin it?
Most other ae86's around here are like 3-4 grand and thats why im so keen on this one
Thanks
Gavin

hey mate, i bought my sprinter in a condition that sounds similar to yours, i paid 1500 and thought it was excellent value. I guess there's not really any point in getting an RACQ inspection, because their check-points don't really seem to apply to older/"specialty" type cars, and even if the car is good for what ur looking for, itll invariably get a poor raitng.
Spots to check for unexpected rust are the bottoms of the doors and the roof at the join with the b-piller. There seems to be some issue with poor drainage here from the factory. So, maybe you could just pull down that bit of the hood lining and check it out.
I also know of a VERY good panel beater in your area (off Bribie Island Rd) who worked on my car. Email me if you would like his details. This person was refered to me through someone with a mustang with its paint and body done by this panel beater. I've also seen the results of his work on my car, his 2 mustangs and his falcon. It is EXCELENT. We've since decided to do our mustang with him. He is also very well priced.
Anyway, good luck on ur purchase if u decide to go through with it, its always good to have more ae86 drivers.
PS maybe you should move this thread to the general discussion forum if u havent already got one there.
Thanks

Man this forum is good...
How bout another question?
How much harder is it to fit a 4age 20v compared to a 4age 16v?
Is it worth the extra effort?
Thanks Heaps

Gavin, this is a good forum to find the info you are after. At the top right hand is a search icon. Alot of questions you will have may have been discussed before. This is a quick powerful tool to find out lots of info. Most minor rust and cosmetics on a car can be easily repared. Many people on this forum alone would jump at the chance of purchasing an ae86 for that price, including me!
Good Luck,
Cheers,
Joel
