guys,
my friend just had the opportunity to grab a trashed ae86 lsd center from a guy who had done one too many burnouts...
funny thing is the guy actually planned to go to toyota and buy a whole new center - until he got the prices!.
he got 2 prices:
new diff center with lsd assembly - approx $NZ2500 (!!!!)
and the better one!: new disk brake diff assembly, complete, with lsd... how much do you think?.... wild guess?....
try $NZ8500!!!
so you people complaining about paying $1500-2000 for a second-hand lsd diff are actually getting a bargain!!

I think that just reflects how stupid toyota factory parts pricing is,not that sprinter owners are whingers for not wanting to pay two grand for essentially twenty year old rear end that will have about three hundred thousand hard kms on it.
why pay so much when you can get a hilux rear or a commodore/skyline borg warner modified to fit for less money, and with more strength?
I fully accept that older, rare parts will cost a premium, but some of the stuff is a bit ridiculous.
Nearly all the older parts that are still listed as available are well overpriced.
one example from work on thursday: '90 model tarago. it needed new front discs as they were undersized. toyota wanted $610 EACH,ex japan. a pair of DBAs were $81.60 each.
no prizes for guessing which discs went on the car.
a week before that,an SV21 camry needed 4 shocks. O/S F was no longer available,but the N/S F was,at $400 odd,again,ex japan.
rears were $300 odd each, but at least they were in Australia,so we could have them the next day if we'd wanted them.
Pedders wanted $90 odd each for the fronts, and $130 ea. for the rears. the pedders shocks went in,both because they were less than a quarter of the price, and because toyota could only supply units for one side of the car on the front.
it's another way of the factory's to encourage you to buy a new car...

I will just say that I was pleased that a local dealer went to the trouble of getting me a quote for a single TRD damper.
$385
For one. Non adj short stroke twin cartirdge race damper.
I declined when he asked if he should get it in for me.
I expect the adj damper to be 600 a piece. NICE.

The sad fact is that many importers are also following suit & cashing in on the scene.
One Adelaide importer was charging $1300 for a rear LSD diff which was missing the left hand caliper. Another I heard had someone who had put a deposit for a similar LSD diff & was going to pay $2200.
AE86 parts are pretty much hard to get these days & people are slowly wising up to their value, pushing the prices of maintaining these cars up even more.

I played with the $1300 LSD said above. I know I could have walked out of there with the thing for $1000. You just gotta have cash and be able to take it there and then. They were busy fixing their forklift, a quick sale would have been ideal.
But minus a caliper, factory looking and 1XX,000 Km for $1000 is stupid IMO. Oh, and no handbrake cables!!
BUT, someone will buy it. Just wait.
Oh, and bust a T series axle (late) and $300 for a new one from Toyota (and a LONG wait).
