The RAV-GT4 BEAST is alive...
|
Mon, 21 June 2004 13:22
|
|
Finally, after almost 6 months of prepping, sourcing, implementation & fitment, and nearly 3 of these months the RAV has been off the road; it breathes once more.
Gone are the guts of an aging and well-served 3S-FE engine to be replaced by the beastly innards of a Jap-Spec GT-Four 3S-GTE, complete with the ST205 gearbox and ST185 LSD. For a while it didn't look like starting up, but an oscilloscope and some careful diagnosis fixed that up. Now it ROARS!
One turn of the key and the adrenaline pumped with the familiar warm-up growl similar to that of a modified Rotary. Both exhaust tips pumped out equal pressure as the sound of the exhaust HAD to be around 90dB (and the rest...).
Ok so it's not back on the road YET... but getting it started and just listening to that engine and the exhaust --- GIMME MORE!
With a bit of luck, it should be road-bound again by mid-week or a little later.

What am I expecting from my first ride? Not to get pulled up by the pigs for an overly-loud exhaust... Nah, it's gonna be one hell of a hoot to get back in the saddle. Watch out Toymods, this thing really is a weapon (wearing a RAV4's body). Overall I think a great sense of satisfaction that this phase of the project (by far the biggest hurdle) has been completed, and you'll have a hard time extracting me from the driver's seat (not from the not wanting to get out, but probably more from the inexperience of driving a turbocharged ride and being sucked into the seat).

I always thought the real danger was not of getting sucked into the seat, but more that you were likely to suck the seat up your arse from fear!!
That's truly awesome dude - Can't wait to see it in the flesh, and you'd better keep bringing it out on some Toymods cruises!!

Good to see it's going.
Where has the car been laid up for 3 months? I remember you saying you had no where to keep it. You can now see that it is completely unrealistic to complete a conversion in one weekend!!

Wow, sounds interesting. A rav4 should be about 100kg lighter than a gt4 (i think) so that should give you a nice power to weight ratio :)

Definitely grab the audio... especially on start-up. This will be run-in on the weekend, as far as I can tell. I'm still paying off the fabrication work for the wiring, exhaust, drivetrain, fitting-up, etc. Costly exercise. I know it will be well worth it though.
The wait will be over soon guys, and I'm sure there will be a few jaws hitting the ground come Dyno Day.

Good to hear your GT4 is getting it's heart transplanted. Should provide me and the other GT4 guys some healthy competition when the Summer Dyno Day (DD-10) rolls around. Is the Grp-A motor completely rebuilt?

Sorry kids, anyone with a modified RAV4 is a ricer, fast or not
Seriously though, impressed to see this come together. Interesting to see how it handles the power - especially given the height.
How do they compare weight-wise to the equivalent GT4?

Mine is about 65mm lower than stock RAV4 height, and up to 100kg's lighter. Obviously this will get lighter still when I get some second-hand rubber put back on my stock rims and take off my rear-weight (spare wheel) for quarter-mile times. The chromies are heavy bitches, and the rubber on those is fantastic for the street, but still excess weight with the amount of rubber on them. I've already lost the two rear seats, saving me a few kg's.

Well it seems I'm extremely unlucky... **takes hat and starts eating it** [Homer Simpson voice] "mmmm... haaattt"
If you've already read the Cruises and Events forum, you'll have seen that I can't make this one, due to the turbo seals being shot, making it piss white smoke out the exhaust pipes when it's at normal running temp. Oh well, in for a hi-flow we go...
