I'm not entirely sure that it is a problem, but I have a '89 ST184 Celica SX with a 2.2i.
At the start of the year it was overheating and I worked out it was a dodge radiator. So in went an after market one. Bigger tubes, don't block as easy etc. Now its winter and mighty cold at that Just north of ballarat and I'm noticing that its running very cold indeed. Sitting on about 130, the temp gauge keeps going down to the cold Line. I pull over, check everything, radiator feels cool, motor feels cool (warm to touch, but not 50 degrees).
This is the first car i've owned/driven that fluctuates this much in temperature. All the other cars usually get a bit warmer on the hot days, little bit cooler on the cold days, but not quite like this.
I was thinking maybe a dodgy temp sender, but the motor doesn't feel hot, thermo fan not running. Heater wasn't on (currently by passed as it leaks), air con running to demist the windscreen (me wearing a beanie and a scarf, looking like an eskimo to keep warm). Its got me stumped.
I did a search, but i could only find overheating problems.

Hrm I haven't checked the thermostat yet, thinking about it logically now, that is probably stuck open!!! It would be a bitch as they aren't cheap and it is a brand new one I fitted less then 3000k ago!! I'll check it when I do the 200,000k service in a week or two.
Now I feel daft, but you get that on the big jobs at 130am in the morning. I think i have been working too much lately to think logically. Considering I fell asleep on my keyboard the other night at 2am while finishing stuff for work!
Ok have fun, sorry if I have wasted anyones time

Yep, temp fluctuations are almost certainly the thermostat. Looks like you've got it sorted.

Hrm its really odd, it only happens occaisionally. It was really wierd the first time I saw it. As I was used to my old radiator, which to go anywhere i needed to use the heater. Hrm I think there is a kahma (spelling?) thing going on here. Summer I had to use a heater to drive the car. Now its winter and my heater started leaking, so I by-passed for the momment. Before it was driving on a 40 degree day with the sunroof and all the windows open, now its windows shut with a beanie, scarf and huge jacket, looking like an eskimo!

Techie, Did the Thermostat fix your overcooling problem?
My friend has a simular problem, He's temp guage goes to the far left cold side when he's driving. His car seems to go into cold mode idle when stationary after driving. (high idle to warm up)
I had a quick look, and i don't think the engine is actually running cold in my friends case. His thrermo fans still switch on and off like usual, the heaters work, the engine is hot as is the radiator and hoses etc. So i'm thinking fualty temp sensor for the guage, fualty coolant temp sensor to the ECU? Never really had this problem before, its always been the otherway around, overheating.
Anyway from what i've described what other things could cuase this?

ok guys question for yas
if the thermostat is faulty and stuck open will that affect the way the engine oil performs in a car
heres what happened , had faulty thermo stuck open car took ages to warm up (ie never fully warmed up )in that time ive tried to get the right kind of oil for my car so kept changing from different brands to fix a harsh cold start problem (this was in melbourne winter)
now i have 20w running in the car and am thinking maybe the oil expriment would have been wrong due to the faulty thermo
anyone shed some light on this ???
cheers

Hehe, I haven't got around to sorting out my thermostat just yet, but I am 95% certain that is what is causing it, as when I pull over to check it out the motor is warm, but not hot like it should be if it was running right. I haven't replaced it yet, but I will soon as I had to get new radiator hoses, but haven't got a new thermostat yet... Work has been crazy lately!
As for the starting troubles, have you checked the plugs, leads, timing belt, timing? Thats what I would be checking, of course changing your oil at service intervals and crap like that.
