Component speakers are speakers that produce their sound from separate locations. Rather then having just one speaker with a tweeter in it, you might have a tweeter mounted in the dash and a mid range speaker in the door card. Both of them run off the same feed though. Somebody might be able to give you a better explanation though

component speakers are exactly what the first word is: components.
Each frequency has its own seperate component. These can sound crap or really good depending on how you install them.
For example,
If you have the tweeter and woofer in the door next to each other it might sound no better than a normal coaxial speaker (woofert with tweeter internally mounted) however, if you were to stick the woofer in the door and the tweeter in the dash/ high in the door, it might sound great...its all relevant to installation!
Component speakers do no suit rear shelf applications...

i think V8_MA61 means frequency range...it would be rather cramped if you had a speaker for each individual frequency
...dont mind me
i'm just being pedantic tonight

Component speakers are made up of 3 parts, a tweeter for high frequencies (approx 1kHz thru to 20kHz), a midrange woofer (for the middle range of frequencies: ~90 Hz thru to 1 kHz). The woofer or subwoofer handle the lower frequencies. A Crossover is used so that high frequency sounds are sent to the tweeter, and other sounds sent to the midrange (A crossover usually consists of Hi Pass and a Low Pass filters).
As to which sound better, the components will sound better IF they are installed correctly. As a general rule, tweeters should be aimed as close to the listening position as possible (as short wavelength noise is easily absorbed by objects), midrange must be pointed in your general direction, and for the subwoofer, the sound is almost non-directional so it doesn't matter.
Hope this answers your question.

I would, because it's pretty much guaranteed to sound better providing you don't have a crap amp.

The tuner in the radio wouldn't work properly, there is some workaround though. It's cos we use a different frequency band. The rest of it will work fine.

Components tend to be better quality speakers because they are the type of speakers that are focussed in higher end audio. You can definately get some great sounding co-axials, but the fact that most companies focus on components means they will be hard to find.
Components are best installed as far forward as possible, and as a general rule it is good to have the tweeters and mid bass aimed at the opposite sides headrest, but its really up to a bit of experimentation on what sounds best for you.
You will plug your components up to an amp. The amp will send power to the crossover, which splits the signal into two different frequency ranges. High for the tweeters, and low for the mid bass.
As for your radio, Jaycar sells an FM converter that deals with this issue. Apparently jap AM is the same so no worries there.

My Clarion from the US allowed me to change "regions" so that it could pick up FM and AM perfectly over here.
