Hi People,
As some may know im building a fairly tuff 2tgteu (3tg bottem end 2tg head) anyway im re-using my pistons, fairly new, but used ross forged pistons/rings and current rods. I have cleaned them up in kero bath, but cant real get into the ring groves...

Have acess to a ultra sonic cleaning bath at uni, and wondering if there is any bads about chucking the whole piston/rod assemebly, and rings seperatly into to clean em up? I dont want to take the rods of the pistons.

Will then use the suppa accurate scales to make sure they are all balanced.
What is the best way to remove a gram or 2 if i have to, and where from?

Heya Logan,,

on of the best tools to use to clean piston ring gaps is..... a broken piston ring!!

if it has a shapr edge (better to use a stone and hone it flat so you don't score the groove), and remember to use gloves, cos the edges of those rucks are feckn sharp!


why don't you want to pull the rods off the pistons?


as for U/S bath, there should be no dramas.. what you need tho is a solvent that will remove the grease/oil/ and carbon...

before you chuck it in the bath, get some WD40/RP7/stuff, and spray the carbon'd areas.. i find that the carbon will easily lift off the next day.

removing weight is interesting.. have to be careful where you take it from..

what you SHOULD do, is remove the rods, and balance them for total weight, and for end to end weight (ie each end is same weight), and same for piston/pin assembly..

i balanced mine all to within 0.1grams which is overkill.. the TOSCO/TRD 3K manual i have said 1 gram..

i removed weight from around the big end caps, and also from the inside of the piston pins... i would not recommend you do this.. instead ask someone who knows Wink ie an engine balancer Very Happy

weigh them first and decide if they need doing.

NEVER use an old ring to clean the ring lands/grooves!!!!
cleaning out that carbon buildup in the bottom is only important if the replacement ring is wider and will bottom out & hit that stuff before compressing in the bore.
it is almost Impossible to clean the groove that way Without nicking/scoring/gouging the ring land, and that surface, between the piston & ring, is just as important a sealing surface as the one between the ring & bore.

the wrist pin now Must be removed & lubricated since you've washed dirt/crap/smegma into it with the kerosene.

Thanks for the replies peoples.
Didnt want to take the pins out cause i dont have the right tools to DIY it. Pretty sure they are a press fit. Guess I will have to now. Gotta to take some bits to the engine builders anyway, get the block honed etc. Which is actually still decided whether or not i should. Lots of miss information...

Im might be reusing the rings (avialablity thing.), the block has polishing marks in the thrust directions (0,90,180,270degs), should i hone it if im reusing the rings?
