electrical problem .. any ideas..?

hello my '90 gt4 is giving me some electrical problems.
when i turn the ignition key it does not start on the first shot most of the time. And sometimes it wont start at all after a few goes, so wat happens is as i keep turning the key i hear a strange clicking sound (also i noticed the clock resets and power steering goes off). eventually it starts up, but i fear this problem, and it must be fixed. so i will be taking it to a mechanic tomorrow.
any ideas as to what this problem might be? and how much it may possibly set me back..
just trying to find out cause i dont want to be sucked in to what a mechanic might say just to charge me more..
thanks guys.

flat / dodgy battery or dead starter motor..
could be because your alternators on the way out but then I wouldn't expect it to stay running once started
1) test the voltage of your battery if < 12 odd volts its flat
2) ensure no corrosion etc. on your battery termninals
3) check that your alternator is functioning by testing the battery voltage once its started... if approx 13.5 volts its ok... more than 14.5 and get worried... less than 13 and worry also
4) check the starter motor leads are properly secured (its a bitch)
5) if all of the above is ok your starters prob stuffed.
