F%$*ing big hammer Very Happy

If you have a small enough pickle fork, then it makes it easier. The fork goes between the tie-rod end and the steering arm. You then hit the pickle fork and it spreads apart the joint neatly. Pickle forks should be available from your local auto parts shop.

Alternatively, put some sort of pressure on the joint to pull it apart, eg a jack, or a friend with a jimmy bar to lever the joint apart (all that is needed is a strong constant pressure) then belt the side of the steering arm with a reasonably sized hammer (eg medium sized engineer's/ball pein hammer).

Obviously undo the nut first...

Sometimes a lighter hit on top of the joint helps (while keeping the constant pressure on the joint as above). The best way to do this without damaging the thread is to screw the nut on till it sits flush with the top of the thread then hit the top of the thread/nut with the hammer (not too hard), and make sure you hit it square on.

Have fun bashing Smile

this was a nightmare on the rear of my mr2... i tried one of those pickle bars and it didnt work... i tried prying it off and then using a BFH..... no luck..... 3 jaw puller kept slipping off the edge of the thing, so i tore all the rubber off the old ball joint and it worked a charm giving the 3 jaw puller plenty of grip.

another easy way is to use 2 hammers and hit at same time on opeset sides, after a couple it should fall out.

The quickest way I have found is to use a heavy arse of a mother of a hammer. I got a 2pound mother with a short handle, the rectangular prism type. I screw the nut back on to give me a bigger striking surface. You should get a new nut with the new ball joint any way, but if ur going to reuse it, I suggest u get some old nut that fits on and use that instead. 1-2 good wacks will pop it out. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Ok DO NOT hit the top of the ball joint with a hammer cause you can severly f*#k the thread on the ball joint and good luck getting the nut back on. To start of with there are 3 ways of seperating ball joints, the simplest and one that requires the least amount of tools is to shock the ball joint out by hitting the sides of the knuckle on the tie rod the the ball joint goes through with 2 hammers on either side at the same time. U can use a fork as previoulsy described above. Or you can use a tool called a ball joint seperator. It has a bolt on one end, and a fork on the other end with a little rod on the other side of the fork. You place the fork in the ball joint and tighten the bolt, the rod puts pressre on the ball joint and pops it out. This is the easiest way and this tool is available at any repco store.
