I bought mine with an BBS steering wheel on it. If I'm not mistaken, the control is attached to the steering wheel.
How does one work out whether it did or not?

There is a cruise control ECU right above the brake pedal. Duck your head under there and look for it next to the steering column. If it's there, you've got cruise, if not, the buttons are obviously useless on the steering wheel.

I think my wording was confusing. The BBS wheel I have now has no buttons, but the original would've if it has cruise control.

Now I understand what you mean. The factory cruise control was never built into the steering wheel. It was just an extra stalk next to the blinker stalk.

Yeah, my bad. I think we're on the same wave length now. 
That's the stalk I mean. I was thinking that because the previous owner changed the wheel, I may have only lost the ability to control it (if it's there).
I was trying to ascretain whether or not I could just a different wheel with controls and just hook them up.
So this control box; I have one mounted on a little bracket above the brake pedal, on the right of it. Is this it?

Sounds like the right one. I'll take a pic of mine if I can get under there easily (I actually installed a factory cruise control system into mine about a year ago).
Compare the pic to yours and see if it matches.

if you do have cruise control you will have noticed it very annoyingly can't cruise above 108km/hr. i found a page that shows how to delimit it. haven't tried it as yet but looks very simple.
