http://shell.deru.com/~sgn1/AW11/4age.htm
quote: The 4A-GE is a non-interference design meaning that if the timing belt (which is recommended to be changed ever 60k miles) breaks, no damage will be done.

$60... [surprise] I guess I'll just get off my ass and do it.
I can't afford to pay a mech. to do it.
I've got the BGB for my car, fairly decent tools etc.
How long a job do you estimate? I haven't done it myself before.
It seems every time I work on my car it never just goes the way it should and it's never back on the road the same day. Thats why while my other car is off the road too I'm not real keen to do it myself. Now I'm thinkin'... at 230k... drive it into the ground ... it already sends the back of the car black after 3 days and leaks oil like a sieve.
Just worried HOW bad it will be if the belt goes... anyone had one snap on the expressway???

Nearly any Toyota engine with a timing belt is non-interference dude.

Thanks. Yeah i know about the non-interference etc. (I actually edited it into my original post... just you guys were so damned quick to jump on the thread... )
I've heard stories of the snapped belt getting jammed up inside the timing cover etc. and can still cause the crank to stop instantly... is it bad? or even likely?

Just do it yourself. I just bought one for my 20V from Toyota and it was about $70 from memory.
Just make sure the cam markers and crank are all lined up and that you have tension on the correct side of the belt.
Good luck!
