Timing belt change... Thu, 24 June 2004 10:29 Go to next message
My cars at 230k and theres a sticker in the timing belt cover that says 79k... Shocked
It's a 4AGE and I dont really have the money to do it now...
Its currently a daily driver while my SC is waiting on parts and I'm doing heaps of k's.
I'm just worried that it's gonna go
What'll happen to my motor if it breaks... say, fangin' on the highway at 130k's.
Besides being a pain in the a*** to get towed etc.
Oh yeah, i know the 4AG is non-interference etc. and it's got stock cams etc, but worried about other possible damage.

Regs.

a timing belt is $60 man...And the time to pull the timing covers off...
WHat wouyld happen, is your cams would stop spinning and working your valves, your pistons and crank would still be spinning and youd more than likely smash all your valves with the pistons. Fuck the motor in other words.

Unless it is definetly one of these noninterference motors

I STAND CORRECTED Razz

the 4age is a non interference type motor where by the pistons wont hit the valves. with that said you could put it off for a while but i'd get it done asap.

quote: The 4A-GE is a non-interference design meaning that if the timing belt (which is recommended to be changed ever 60k miles) breaks, no damage will be done.

$60... [surprise] I guess I'll just get off my ass and do it.
I can't afford to pay a mech. to do it.
I've got the BGB for my car, fairly decent tools etc.
How long a job do you estimate? I haven't done it myself before.
It seems every time I work on my car it never just goes the way it should and it's never back on the road the same day. Thats why while my other car is off the road too I'm not real keen to do it myself. Now I'm thinkin'... at 230k... drive it into the ground Mad ... it already sends the back of the car black after 3 days and leaks oil like a sieve.
Just worried HOW bad it will be if the belt goes... anyone had one snap on the expressway???

Nearly any Toyota engine with a timing belt is non-interference dude.

Thanks. Yeah i know about the non-interference etc. (I actually edited it into my original post... just you guys were so damned quick to jump on the thread... Very Happy )
I've heard stories of the snapped belt getting jammed up inside the timing cover etc. and can still cause the crank to stop instantly... is it bad? Confused or even likely?

I thought the belt would be cheaper than $60 Rolling Eyes
A standard a/c, alternator belt are around $15 - I thought maybe $35-40, but maybe wrong. If its only used round town I'd be less inclined to worry, but it will catch you at the worst time no doubt. Will take you longer to do if you let it break as you will have to re align the cams in relation to piston and each other, whereas now you could just mark each

My friend has a ford corsair..assumed the guy b4 him changed the belt at 100 000 (bought at 155000), coming round a round about lost power Sad (3 or more bent valves..recod head later..)..I think you would call that an interference motor.. Damn!

Atleast yours wouldnt do that

Just do it yourself. I just bought one for my 20V from Toyota and it was about $70 from memory.

Just make sure the cam markers and crank are all lined up and that you have tension on the correct side of the belt.

Good luck!
