Need some help with the work I'm doing. Thu, 24 June 2004 16:03 Go to next message
Hi, I'm new around here as you might have noticed -- but anyway. I have a TA46 Celica. A Japanese import. Whilst it's not original by any stretch (new lights, etcetera, various parts stolen from my RA40 'spares farm') I need some advice.

-- My engine's a 13T-U. Does anyone have any emissions control diagrams for these reasonably-common-yet-not engines?

-- My transmission's a W50 series 5-speed. Can this be mated to other Toyota engines (R series, M series?)

-- The ride height is a foot off the ground, this seems far too far. The RA40 is much lower -- Is it just the springs? The shocks can't be the cause, can they?

-- Can I fit a 2TG head to my engine? Perhaps the intake manifold from a 2T-B, to get twin carburettors?

If anyone can help me with any of these questions I'd appreciate it muchly! Thanks!

-- Cheers, Neal

I suspect you actually have a T50 (Celica alloy case 5speed) - I'm not aware of the W50 (Celica steel case 5 speed) ever having been mated to a T series engine. You can check this by looking at the ID plate on the firewall. That said a W50 will mate up to an M or R series motor with the appropriate bellhousing.

You could but there is so much other crap you'd have to do that it would be much easier to just get a 2TG and fit that to your car.

My Coronas came with 3T and W50 as a stock...

Wow! OK! Never seen one before. All the T series stuff here seemed to carry T50 boxes here in Australia.

Sorry about the late reply!

But yes, I have a W50. Smile

I might get an 18R now that I know I can fit it! I even have a bellhousing on my sparesfarm.

Come to think of it, anyone interested in swapping an 18RC or RG for my 13T? Just easier to get parts and all -- Engine's in good shape, the emissions control system is crazy and I don't know how to figure it. Call me a dunce, but .. well, I am. But anyway. Engine's clean, so far as I know.

Is it legal to swap engines pre-registration so long as you have proof of ownership of the base car?

I know about the 3TGTEU, but I don't think the head and stuff fit on my 13T, besides, it's a little more than out of my league!

I need to upgrade my suspension badly before I do stuff like that -- I do have an A4X Celica, afterall.

If money was no object, I'd go a 4AGE with the 20v head and such. Very Happy But the 18RC is a cheap engine for parts, and the 18RG is a really nice but easy to find head and such.

Hi Neal,

Great to see another 40-series man on this forum. I don't own a TA46, but I have a TA45 Celica. My TA45 is a square-headlight coupe (looks much the same as a late RA40 Coupe). It came with a 2TGEU and T50 standard. As you have a carby engine, am I right in assuming your TA46 is an earlier round-headlight model?

As the TA46 has a 1.8lt engine standard, I reckon you ought to fit a 3TGTEU (it's not that hard), or a 3T/2TG hybrid. I can't imagine that a 3T/2TG hybrid would present any registration hassles (a 3TGTEU may require engineering though).

Oddly enough, no, my Celica's a 1979 model, square-lights -- Original kit included electric mirrors!

I need to find a way to get more out of the engine though. It lacks any urgency, and the top end power lacks -- there's a little buzz in the midrange, but that's it; I figure it's to do with the emissions control system fitted (vacuum, heatpipes, an EGR...)

More details for the sakes of it; The car's fitted with air conditioning, although I plan to remove it -- It's an 1800SE model. The driving position's what I bought it for. Always did like it, just the fact that the car's practical, but has that feature.

My TA45 use to have electric mirrors (I plan to refit them some day). It had A/C but I removed it soon after I got the car. It's also got power windows, rear disc brakes and a funky black vinyl interior.

Is your car liftback or coupe?

I had an 18RGEU in my TA45 for a while. I decided it was a mistake and removed it. Afterall, its a'T'A45 (or in your case a TA46), not a 'R'A45.

Stick with a 'T' motor is my suggestion, but perhaps something a little more rapid than a standard 13T.

Mine's a liftback -- I'm guessing yours may be a coupe? Smile

And I see your point, in regards to that. A 2TG/13T hybrid is what I was considering 'cause I love the DOHC NA sound, and twin side-draft Mikunis would be a nice thing, as compared to a crappy Solex (?) carb...

Yep, my TA45 is a coupe.

Give fuel injection some consideration too. The early EFI systems are pretty basic.

Does your car have the European parking lights? (s/w on steering column). And the OK Monitor? And how about the "fasten seatbelts" light? And my personal favourite, the ding-dong chime when you hit about 105km/h?

Mine has the euro parking lights... Fasten Seatbelts isn't on mine though, and what's an OK monitor?

I'd like the ding though. Would save me speeding fines! But no, no dinging.

I'll concur with the "stay with a T series engine" fraternity. As you've mentioned a preference for naturally aspirated motors, I'd start looking for a late model 2TG motor to make a hybrid 2T/3T motor with your 13T donating parts too. you'll also be able to get a 2L displacement from that build with boring. cahnging to an R series motor will require crossmember and accelerator changes too.

Neal,

The 'OK monitor' should be located in the centre console. It tells you if there is a problem with brakes (fluid level), coolant (overflow bottle level), lights, etc.

Hm. No, no OK panel, but there's a gap in the console! Oh well. Wiring's not there anyway I don't believe.
