GT30 - dead
|

Just Friday last week my GT30 died; the reason was traced back to a lack of oil due to a blockage within the system.
I was driving to work when the turbo made a groan and then a metal on metal rattle I made a phone call to Brendan (Grace Motorsports) then pulled the turbo off on Sat morning ready to send it to GCG for inspection. I disconnected the oil feed line to discover that the oil was pooled up in the line and it seemed that it was not passing thru the turbo.
I sent the unit to GCG where they diagnosed that the core had no oil passing through it and this had caused the bearing failure; the oil feed hole within the housing is 0.8mm in diameter and it had obviously become blocked.
Brett from GCG did everything within reason and then did some more to see that I was looked after and that the turbo was repaired in good time.
I have to say that I am very happy with GCG's service and I have no hesitation to recommend them to anyone in the market for a new turbo, waste gate, or other turbo support system products.

3000 - 4000K or once a month. I check the oil fortnightly.

so what parts need replacing?
does it require a full rebuild? If you don't mind, would you be able to tell us how much it costs, as quite a few people have been wondering about the costs of rebuilding ballbearing turbos lately.
thanks
Chris

The core has been replaced - I suggest if anyone is considering rebuilding one then they should speak to the supplier or manufacturer for details.
I believe that core costs are relative to the spec.
Brett and I were able to negotiate on price, to an amount that I was very pleased with.

do they do any custom work, like mounting a gt30/35 to a 1jz, or mainly just deal with parts and rebuilds?

I believe that they do parts and rebuilds. As far as custom work, just ask them what they cover.
Looking forward to seeing you at dyno day Greg.

I'll be tehre, but my @#$%ing car wont
problem after problem, delay after delay.
timeframe at the moment is looking like 2-3 weeks, and that's assuming things go well, and that's just to get it driving - not counting emissions testing and registration, which means waiting for an EPA bookin :\

I think it is just a NSW thing as I have a mod plate & RWC for mine as well and no emissions test was needed.

Yes - there is a good chance that I would have run if the car was going; hey I could have run it uncapped with no turbo?

turbo engines with no turbos make notoriously little power - due in no small part to a much lower CR

i still think it would
his comp isnt that low,
he has to beat a dead stock 4age
umm hmmm....
2tg/3tg hybrid
aftermarket comp
ke20 with slicks
ummm i think it would beat a 15.8
