my temp gauge doesnt work in me ke55, i went to the wrecker and bought a new one and installed in into the tacho but it still doesnt work, i found which wire goes to the thermostat and cleaned up the connected (sanded the copper so there would be a nice clean connection) and reconected it all up but it still didnt work, the gauge doesnt give a reading, and its making warm ups really painful as i dont know when to take the choke out (ie im running the choke for too long and using too much petrol)
the car has a later model 4k (out of an 82 ke70) installed in it, i was just wonderng if neone can help me out
thanks alot

Try replacing the voltage stabilizer in the dash.
It's a 3 pin transformer. I've had this problem before and found that they are very temperamental. I've replaced them only to have them fail again after a few months. If I remember correctly they are at the top of the dash, on the back, around the middle. New ones can be purchased from toyota or if you now the part number you could probably get it from Dick Smith.

i have a similar problem but both the fuel quage and temp stop every now and then. you think it could be the stabilizer as well?

I agree, the 3 pin thing is called a voltage regulator. It regulated the voltage to the temp and fuel gauges, at about 10 volts. The old KE30's did not have this as the gauges themselves had a bi-metal regulator (or maybe I am thinking RA23). But the latter KE55 had the solid state voltage regulator. Yes, they burn out sometimes, but sometimes the contacts are just bad. Try soldering the joins rather than just using the screw on thing.
