Define "good". What is your budget? Are you actually going to do an engine swap or are you just dreaming like most people around here?

Talk to an importer, they still bring in MA71 front cuts from time to time. Not sure what they go for these days but it was well under $3k last time I went looking.

4afc is a 1600cc sohc pos Razz

1ggze is a 'bit' better...almost double the hp of a 4m factory,
but imo, the turbo 1ggte model is a better motor to play with. but seeing as the bay is pretty big in them, id look at a 7mge or gte...they have big potential and bolt in with your current mounts im pretty sure Smile

Personally I think the 6AFC is a better option. 1400cc's of carburetted FWD grunt Smile

Seriously though, the Toyota engines worth considering are:

7MGTE
1JZGTE
2JZGTE
1UZFE

There are other options, but given the size of the car and a realistic budget (you own a Toyota Crown so you obviously aren't rich) these are your only real options.

The 7MGTE is by far the easiest conversion, but good examples are hard to find. A 1JZGTE/2JZGTE/1UZFE will probably involve a rack & pinion steering conversion

For the 7MGTE or 1UZ swap, you would be looking at a bill of AT LEAST $5k if you do the work yourself. For the 1JZ swap you will need at least $6-7k, and more like $10k for a 2JZGTE or $13k for a 2JZGTE with the 6-speed box.

Come back in a year when you're got the money and we'll be happy to help out with ideas.

I would also budget on a brake upgrade for around $1,000...

Hehe, now now blake, time to look up what 'f' stands for in the toyota codes Razz
(DOHC fuel efficient or something along those lines....)

Anyway as everyone else has said, a budget, or even better a budget and what you want to achieve would help everyone to help you Smile

Its nice to see that only 2 or 3 of the people responding to this actually have crowns.

I've got the 7MGE in my MS53 1968 and with brake mods and driveline mods it owes me at least $8K. I've had gear boxs rebuilt, head done, gone thru 2 diffs, now have an LSD, blew a tailshaft now have one thats 3". Had the fuel tank moded and did all the seals in the block and the gear box. Also had to pay someone to wire the car.

It was a great conversion. Though I'll be doing a 7MGTE conversion soon though.

If you stick with the M's any engine you choose will just bolt straight in using your existing engine mounts.

As said earlier the J's will require at least custom engine mounts and maybe a rack and piion conversion.

I don't think the 1UZFE will fit, from what I heard around here and in Classic Crown forums. I know it doesn't fit in a MS5X I've seen one lowered over a MS5X chassis. Having said all that though I have heard (only heard of not much and haven't seen pics) of a 1UZFE powered MS75 I think.

Then you have to look at what brakes and suspension and driveline mods will cost. Its well and good to say the you can get a 7MGTE for $1400 you have to get it in and running.

Most people here are talking about doing injected conversions. I know a few blokes that are going wild on carbied 2 and 4M's. Dual carbs, boring them to 3L and doing head work. This maybe a viable option to.

Pm or for any info on my conversion

All bullshit aside, any M series engine will be a bolt in affair. You'll have to do a bit of rewiring and sort out an EFI fuel system.

A 1UZ is a bit more work but, for the MS85 anyway, it can (and has been) done without a rack and pinion conversion.

All turboed JZ engines (with the exception of the VVTi 1JZGTE) will require a rack and pinion conversion or a single turbo conversion. THe VVTi 1JZGTE has a rather forward mounted single turbo so there is plenty of room for the steering box and it to coexist.

Go the Mighty 3K. With the engine bay being huge, maybe 2 of them to double the torque.

Jokes aside, Stitt is on the ball, if you have a budget to keep to.

I own a 7MGTE Crown wagon, a GS120 series, and it goes like a dog shot in the ear. OK, i did not do the conversion, but it should not be that hard, if you sit down, and nut out what you want to do. Working out on paper first, what you wish to do, and then having brain storming sessions will make it easier.

If you want some pics, i will take some over the next few weeks, but as i dont own a digital camera, i will have to get film, etc etc etc.

Cheers

Andrij

Just tacking a bit on the end because I don't really want to start a new thread based on a pipe dream.

If you had a budget of $10-12k and some bizarre desire to buy a crown, what would you do? I'm after something that is reasonably comfortable, rides well, and will go around the occasional corner even.

But I'm also after acceleration. Much acceleration (drive an AW11 MR2 for three years and this sort of thing happens).

What model Crown would be best for a 1JZGTE/2JZGTE/1UZ conversion? (I have a phobia of 7Ms). MS112? Could it be done, and well, for around this budget?

Re: wots a good engine to put in a 76 crown Thu, 08 July 2004 11:35 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Within reason, just about any engine can go into any car.

For that money you could probably go:

Crown $3500 (a good one, not a POS)
Landcruiser calipers, DBA rotors $1000
2JZGE & 5 speed installed $6000
LSD $500
Suspension work $2000

For a reasonable package, and a turbo engine, you are looking at more like $15-$20k

Generally the more modern the car, the easier conversion. There are exceptions though, depending on the engine going in. The main thing that will affect your decision is the factory steering setup - mostly with the twin turbo JZ motors and the 1UZ. The atmo motors and the 7MGTE shouldn't pose a steering headache - but measure to be safe.

As I thought, it adds up, doesn't it?

I'll see what the options are like when I finally get around to needing the bigger car.

Any workshops you could particularly recommend for the conversion in the Brisbane area?
