ST162 decided to brake down this evening. I'm on the way to Sorrento for the week, and past Frankston, around Dromana, the car just lost it, wouldn't go. Thought it could be the hill (lol yeah right) so I went down a gear (to 4th). Stalled it, engine steamed like hell. Pulled over, called a local tower, $250 and 5 hours later my car is sitting at the mechanic and I'm here typing this. Not happy jan. Furious that
a) i didn't notice the temperature gauge before.
b) didn't check the oil at the servo on the way.
c) i'm without the car for the week
d) my holiday is on hold
e) i'm probably going to have to replace the engine, unless it was just a leak in the radiator or something. I'm not too mechanical so I don't know anyway.

At the servo on the way home (in the tow truck) we filled the radiator back up (empty obviously) tried to start it up again (see what would happen) and some shit started spurting everywhere. Head gasket? I don't know. Either way some big dollars are likely to be spent in the next fortnight. Holidays off to a great start boys.

that's the car by the way, I've only had it for a month!

head gasket and warped head will be the beginning of your problems...source a new engine!

A bit ambiguious, but any estimates as to how much an engine replacement costs? (the same one I imagine)

Dude, all i can say is, YOU POOR BASTARD, you just bought the damn thing didn't you.
As for a new engine you'll be lookin around $500-$800 or you can be hella crazy and get a 3sgte but they cost heaps more. Anyway just a thought.

Yeah man I'm spewin. It's down at the mechanic now, I got a call he reckons the heads'd be gone for sure. But I need to give him the keys before he can look at it lol. Smile

Really 500-800? And roughly how much for labour etc.?

Hmm 3sgte, is that the engine from the GT4? Wink

Hey sorry to hear your engine went patrick Sad Did you ever get the compression/t-kay test done 'cause you were worried about white smoke if I remember correctly!

3S-GTE is from the GT4 or you can get them from MR2 turbos as well...

Sounds like your engine is fubar btw - I would definitely go for the 'replacing' option, see if you can get your hands on a 2nd gen 3S-GE from an MR2, the price will nearly be the same as a 3S-GE from an ST162 - all you have to do is put your current intake manifold on the new engine and wire it all up.

wanna see my 7m bores from the previous owner driving it till it almost stopped?

My sisters eunos...pfft women! Drove until it stopped..needed a hone, both heads straightened, plug leads were welded into the head...$2700 later...it runs ok, and rattles like a bastard when cold...and the bottom end is suspect imo.

yeah same as everyone else, bad luck dude, a 3sge wouldn't cost that much, but find out whats wrong with this one first, at current i'm looking into a 3sge conversion from a 5sfe, but i'm looking at the series 3, its a more refined engine runs roughly about 132Kw. the half cut that i need here will cost me $1500, you may just need the series 3 engine and loom for you car, its just something that you may look into as an option if you choose to change the engine.

Thanks for your help fellas.

Engine was replaced yesterday. I ended up paying around $1500 for a replacement engine, installed and everything. I was away on holiday for most of the week so I couldn't really check anything while my car was down in Melbourne getting fixed.

It's the same Celica engine, imported from Japan. I hear it's running really smoothly, a lot better than the last engine I had (which didn't have much left in it). It's got a one year warranty and is gaurenteed to be between 60-90,000 k's old. That part staggered me. Anyway, I hear that the Japanese versions have different heads/other parts in them that have advantages over the ones in Australia, or does that sound like bullshit to you guys?

Either way my car is back and I'm not that fussed. Just my wallet.

What do you think.

Patrick

Yeah, I think the jap-spec runs a different compression ratio (closer to 10.0:1 as opposed to aus 9.0:1)...that is most likely due to different head design. Aside from that, it has the jap-spec ECU and no EGR. You might want to run it on a diet of premium unleaded though (95 RON at least, pref. 98 octane) check for pinging!

Most important check your timing! They (whoever installed it) may have retarded the timing a bit from standard settings to make up for crappy fuel we have in aus (91 octane is your standard fare)

That would = bad for powah.

Use 98 octane and get standard jap timing and you will get the full benefit of the jdm engine.

Engine's been replaced. Turns out it was the radiator that caused it. New radiator installed, new starter motor, new clutch while I'm at it.

Yipee.

She's running well now anyway.
