AE86 Whiteline spring info Sat, 07 September 2002 01:28 Go to next message
Hey Guys,
Anyone got the whiteline springs? I need to know the wire diameter of the front and back springs, and the amount of coils.

And does any one know wheather they are hot or cold wound?

and if you got them, have you got them with the shocks they sell, or other ones.

Thanks,

Rob

Rob,
Nearly all car springs are hot wound. The rate is about 140/150lb". I have a set height-reset at my house, along with a cut pair (not mine, just in storage). If you are trying to work out the rate, when I took off my set to industrial springs on port rd, the guy at the counter calculated about 140lb". You are better off buying some constant rate springs from them than using Whiteline IMO.

The dampers from Whiteline are KNOI which are OK but there is better, but not avaiable in OZ. I'm looking into a group buy for some of us SA AE86 owners for Tokico dampers from the US. The cost is significantly less then the KONI, but no warrenty (unless you want to send back to America ) and other factors to consider.
Both short stroke and normal will be purchased front and rear. Also 5 way adj Illumina is an option (if pricey).
I can almost get a full set front and rear for the same price as the quote for the replacement of ONE of my TRD yellow dampers. Guess what I will be doing Smile

I run whiteline springs.

the rates for the std design coils are 200lb/in. front, and 170lb/in. rear. the fronts are progressive, the rears linear rate.
the shocks they use are Koni yellows, which are rebound adjustable.

Just remembered, my springs are Kings, not Whiteline. So my comments are for King springs.

Sorry,

Thanks Jaz and Justin,

I've got my AE86 back in Poland, and when I go back there I want to get a set of springs made by a local company. I am already taking a sh!tload of stuff with me from oz over there, but springs are way to heavy, and I can get custom made springs for equiv AUS$35 a piece. (and to ship back 5kg to Poland costs $91 Air Mail, $64 econo-air, and $44 sea.. which takes a couple months.., and I don't even wanna know how much all 4 springs would weigh)

I just want to know the wire diameter, mainly.

My mate who used to race here in SA said that hot wound springs would sag the first time he'd hit a bump and mallala... and i wast just wondering, coz the roads in Poland are everything but smooth.

anyway, thanks for the replys.

Well my re-set set are 13.2mm, cut kings are 12.35mm. My coilovers are different diameter for 300 and 220.

But a major factor in the wire diameter is its strength when is was produced as long strands from BHP. Considering most Oz springs are made from BHP steel, then you can use diameter, coils and work out poundage. Considering you won't be using BHP steel in Poland, the values we give are pretty useless.

Any decent spring maker should be able to take your details: desired wieghted hight, car wieght, wieght distribution, spring base diameter, spring top diameter and maybe a couple that don't come to mind, to make a custom set of springs. And you need to state your poundage. This will determine windings.
