Interior trimmers in Sydney Mon, 28 June 2004 03:58 Go to next message
Hey people,

Anyone know/had experience with a good and reasonably priced auto trimmer in Sydney? I need my door trims done (just the trim stripe bit that runs through the middle), rear seat side trims (dunno what they're called), and the whole thing carpeted. I don't want leather or anything, just some good quality velour.

Cheers,

Jeremy.

Hey mate,
Most are quiet expensive due to the labour. Look in the yellow pages I went to one in Alexandria which is in inner Sydney to get my stock sprinter seat retrimed and it costed me 280 all up. Not sure whether you call it cheap or expensive. But Ill get back to you on what the place is called if you are interested.
Thanks

Yeah that would be good thanks mate. I'm going to get a qoute from Master Auto Trim in St. Peters this afternoon so hopefully I can get a good idea of what it will cost to get what I want done.

I wouldn't say $280 to trim a seat was expensive considering it would be pretty involved work to get it stitched up and fitting nicely. I guess the most expensive part of what I need will be the carpet, coz the door trims would be very straightforward and the rest of it they will just do with vinyl spray (the proper stuff!) and that paint they use that doesn't scratch off.

Cheers,

Jeremy.

You can buy moulded carpets for the AE86 still. I brought front and rear for around $160 I think. Fitted well and looks good. Can pick from a few colours.

Where did you get them? I got quoted $250 for moulded just for the front! That was from some place in Concord.

Tru-Fit moulded carpets is one I have seen advertised in magazines. Not sure if that's the one TurboRA28 is talking about...

I can get links/numbers when I get home from work if you like?

I think I got it from Knox carpets? They are in Melbourne but posted up to Syd, I think the $160 included postage actually.

Let me know I can dig through my mags and find the number tonight.

I got mine from Knox the other day, the carpet feels really nice. Front and rear plus the underlay for both was $160 delivered to Perth, took them less than a week to come too.

As for this. If you're paying a auto trimmer, and it doesn't look good, i'd be promptly changing trimmers! From my experience, most of them are really good, definetly a case of you get what you pay for though.

for auto trimmers i use COOL TRIM, they are in peakhurst (dont know the num off hand but are in yellow pages)

he charged $2500-$3000 for vinyl retrim (depending on carpet chosen (loop, plush, super plush)

OR

$4500-$5000 for leather depending on carpet again

BUT i agree with AE86DRIFT, if you can find interior that is in good nic then use that, go to the hardware store and buy vinyl spray can paint to the colour you want and masking tape if required and spray and fit... its cheap, easy and keeps oroginal look always... thats what i ended up doing and i never looked back

Thanks guys. Looks like I will be getting carpets from Knox then. Do they supply carpet for the whole interior including the boot?

As for trimmers and doing it myself - Guys I want it to last and not look dodgy at all. Yeah I can spray stuff but it looks shithouse (I've done it before), too shiny and not factory. I went to see Louie from Master Auto Trim and he showed me some interior plastics that they had just sprayed. Didn't matter how hard I tried, I couldn't scratch it off and it looked factory, not all shiny. I got a rasonable quote from him and decided on a fabric for door trim inserts (nice suede-like stuff) but will get some more quotes coz some things didn't add up.

As for getting good condition interior to replace mine - Forget it. I haven't spent all this money on the mechanical side of things and organising respray to let the whole car down with a stock interior. Doesn't matter how good condition it is, it's still 20 years old and not very nice (Aus spec) IMO.

Trust me guys, when it's all done, you will understand why I'm getting it done properly! Very Happy

Exactly. If I wanted a job that will "never look great", I would do it myself. All you have to do is look at any show cars around (not that this is what I want - it will just give you an indication of skill) to realise that a professional trimmer can make your interior look better than you ever imagined.

Vinyl dye..VHT is the brand...I know PEP's stock it.. read the instructions ...twice!!....follow them exactly and clean clean clean what your spraying ..swabbing with metho 2 or 3 times a day for 2 days is my suggestion..and get the satinfinish This is the only one I have ever used that actually seems to penetrate the vinyl...others just seem to just coat and sit on top and yes your right they look like shite all shiny and patchy..The dash pads and door trims I have done with VHT look factory..Seems to work best darker over lighter colours...black over brown etc

Thanks Greg. So I take it the VHT stuff is not a spray?

Ordered carpets today from Knox and they are sending me 4 sq. metres extra of the flexible carpet to do where the back seats normally go and the whole hatch area too. VERY well priced.

Also found a place that sounds a lot cheaper than Master Auto Trim. They trimmed my mate's Hilux in tweed with flames stitched into the seats and whole dash trimmed for $1,500 and it is such top notch trimming work.

Yeah, VHT is a spray. The best stuff out of the ones I used for my RA60 interior. Make sure you clean the surfaces properly, when you do, it'll come out mint!

VHT is a spray-on dye
comes in a typical aerosol can.
This is the most amazing stuff ever.
It successfully dyed the interior door handles of my car, without rubbing or chipping off.
Hell, when I got bored it even dyed my phone, and it has had no chips or rubbing off!

in short, best stuff out there.
and yes, read the instructions. 5 light coats of this is better than 2 heavy coats... heavy coats can build up a liquid layer, then it sets like paint (ie - chips off)

Great. Looks like I have carpet and vinyl sorted. Now just gotta get the trim done! Oh, and paint the other plastic parts. Any tips on that? Particular primer and paint to use to get a good, factory (not shiny) look?

Thanks guys!

Jeremy.

interior door handles of my car, and my mobile phone, are both plastic (hint hint)
the VHT vinyl dye is not just a vinyl due - also great for leather and plastic

Man, you gotta see the rest of the car! It's a single cab, but the chassis has been shortened and an extra cab tray attached. It's been body-dropped 3 inches. The Playstation controller in the centre console is to control the air bag suspension, plus it's got a 1GGTE in it! It's friggin awesome man. The roof is aboout waist high when it's sitting on the chassis rails.

Ok, back on the topic, that VHT stuff is the goods man. Not so good if you don't have great ventilation tho - I just ate about 10 kgs of food! Gave me the munchies big time! hahahaha

Thanks for all the help peeps.

Whatever you do, avoid Glen Waters Custom Auto Interiors. He is overpriced and the quality of his materials are shabby to say the least.
